Motivating students? (338 hits)

Why is it that there seems to be a problem with the motivation levels (or with motivating) African-American students on all levels? It's almost the number 1 complaint - whether true or not! "They aren't motivated!" How can that be?

Either way, how do you think we can motivate students today?

I will soon be a college freshman & I feel it is one of the hardest things I will ever do. I did pretty well in high school.. but now I feel like I cant start all over again.. and do things they way I want to THIS TIME! Really taking control of my education and getting the best, and nothing less..

but staying encouraged and MOTIVATED is one of the biggest worries I have. Ive been praying on it. .heck, I even cried. I feel like I REALLY dont want to mess this up! Like I did some parts in high school.. and life in general.

Kids will only be motivated if they have examples of how motivation pays off. Raise your kids to value education and hard work, and this problem will be solved.

Many Black American students aren't motivated because they don't have a sense of purpose. They live for the moment rather than living to leave behind a legacy of Christian faith, obedience and service for their children and grandchildren. Everyone has the same purpose - to create other human beings in God's image. Problems arise when we fail to understand the importance of passing this sense of purpose to the next generation. Because this transference did not occur in past generations, this new generation is more selfish rather than selfless.

Black students are not motivated because in most cases there is no motivation at the home. Home is where it starts.

When you have a strong seed planted in you to achieve the very best life has to offer and to keep God first in all you do, it is easy to find the motivation to pursue.

Three of my bigget motivations are my children. That is becaue I want to leave them a legacy of commitment and faith in God. I want them to know and understand that the village is carried by each person. If they succomb to drugs and things of little spiritual value above all else, the motivation will limit their success.

For example, engaging in drug use stiffles the mind from achieving its full potential. The drug user is not helping the village while using drugs. That personis actually robbing the village. Likewise, the drug seller is doing the exact same thing. It is selfish thinking that benefits nobody over the long haul. The village must stand strong over the long haul. That makes the motivation to be the uplifting of the village and then should drive persons to make wise choices towards that goal.

Great question! Today, I wish that the younger generation finds the motivation to keep the village uplifted. That will require selflessness.

Why black students aren't motivated?
We are not talking to them we are speaking below and above. THe middle ground has yet to be discovered; within the home, community and school. They are being force fed the same colonialized edutrainment everyone of us was ear-jected. Education must advance if it's going to raise interest, question dialogue in the manner of truth. Otherwise you can write this next generation off (As you've done the last )and continue the Criminalizing, Curfews,Dress Code Laws and Simply passing them on the street and rolling those windows on your way to give EXXON your last dollar.
