I was in a book store and as someone who enjoys science fiction a great deal, I looked for Octavia Butler. I heard good things about her books. However, when I opened the cover and read the first page, I noticed the book was written in first person.
I've found that many black fiction writers (Toni Morrison excepted), write in first person. Now, I mean mainstream popular black writers, not referring to authors I haven't read or heard of or writers from our beloved Harlem Renaissance. I even went through a pile of Zane's books and found that they were all written in first person.
Writing in first person is like cheating to me. It's too easy to narrate that way. Whenever I grab a book and flip to the first page and see something written in first person I immediately put it back on the shelf (exception, Coldest Winter Ever).
Am I the only one noticing this?
