Is College Important? (733 hits)

I think having knowledge is important. But you don't need to go to college to be knowledgeable, intelligent, or worldly. You only need a library and a couple of book stores.

I've had friends who look down on people who don't have college degrees, or don't have friends who haven't been to college. OR WORSE, think they're smarter because they have a degree. It's a little elitist.

The only reason I would think going to college is important is to get a decent well paying job. Otherwise, all you need to be intelligent is some curiosity and access to books.

I don't think college is needed for knowledge. I didn't get my thirst for learning until I finished. All college does(or is supposed to do) is prepare you for the working world, not to be an intellectual.

College is important. Thanks what I tell my children. Like Clark said, the tution might be a problem though. But if they develop the thrist for more knowledge at a young age, then college will be attainable, through academic scholarships.

College is a choice, a smart one. I have been rejected for jobs, because I was under qualified, even thou I had years of experience.

I will never look down on someone with no college degree, as you always learn from each other. It has been proven over the years that people with degrees still need to learn from those already in their line of business. They need to learn the practical knowledge and that is something that some people are just born with. My 16 year old son listens to cars and by the sound he can tell whether there is something wrong and in 9 out of 10 times he knows what is wrong. It is god given, as he never went to school to know about cars. He is in a small business school right now and learns about marketing and everything that goes with that. A technical degree engineer would look down on my son, but he will never have the ears my son has. He will have to learn to listen to the cars, and still not be able to 'hear' what is going on.

It is not necessary to look down on anybody. each and everyone of us has specific talents; we only need to put them to good use. Some of us know how to do it, others just don't and need help recognizing their talents... Until then, there is nothing wrong with having no degree. Besides, some people want a degree, others think it makes live complicated.... However, I do believe a degree is important, because society makes it important. And....... you get paid for your knowledge. So, people, get educated!!!

The short answer to your question is "Yes, college is important."

My advice to my children was that college is where you "learn how to learn" at an advanced level. What you know today will be obsolete tomorrow. The best knowledge to have is to know how to learn. Success in the Information Age is a function of continuous learning.

These are skills that we all must acquire in order to have a greater influence over outcomes in our lives in the 21st century. These essential skills are:
- read with understanding;
- convey ideas in writing;
- speak so that others can understand;
- observe critically;
- listen actively;
- solve problems and make decisions appropriately;
- plan and put those plans into action effectively;
- use math to solve problems and to communicate;
- cooperate with others;
- guide others;
- advocate and influence;
- resolve conflict and negotiate;
- take responsibility for life-long learning;
- learn through research;
- reflect and evaluate;
- use information and communication technology.

These are the skills necessary to survive in the 21st century. Are you equipped for the future?

I think if you precieve yourself as a intellectural or a smart person, than you should understand that having a college degree is in your best interest. Sad as it sounds, many people, businesses, financial backers etc respect a college educated person, (at first anyway). In most cases you can't get your foot in the door unless you have your credentials. Unless you know somebody who knows somebody.
