How to Treat A Stranger”
The story is told, one of which you may be familiar with, of a drunk and a woman joining church during a good old country style revival. The woman announced her intentions to give here life to the Lord and joined the church on Tuesday night of the revival. It was noted in her testimony that she had attended that church as a child many years prior. She was a faithful member of Sunday school, the children’s choir as well as BTU. As a young teen she was equally active and was celebrated accomplishments in the academic arena. She went on to college and had a successful time in her higher pursuits (she was never an official member of the church). Suddenly she became unheard of. ‘Did success separate her from the savior’? On Wednesday night an old man came to church and at the appropriate time announced his intentions to ‘renew’ his membership and strengthen his relationship with the Lord. The old man, in contrast to the woman, was very dirty. His clothes seemed asthough they had not been washed in months if not years.
While he was not noted to be drunk, his breath reflected a heavy use of alcohol. The lady, who had just joined the previous night, stood to object to this manjoining ‘their church’. Jesus said “for I was hungry, and ye gave me food; I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink; I was a stranger, and ye took me in”. His word also said in Hebrews 13:2, ‘Be not forgetful to entertain strangers…’ What the lady didn’t know was that the old man was a ‘preacher/pastor’ that the Lord was reclaiming.
