The Queen's Chair: Mr. Obama? I Don't Think So...

Addressing the first African-American President of the United States as "Mr." Obama is getting on my last nerves. It just downright disrespectful. I have NEVER heard media address Presidents Bush or Clinton as Mr. Clinton or Mr. Bush while they were in office. Let alone when they were out of office.

I'm annoyed. What's next? Are they going to start calling him Barack? Big B? He has the highest office on the land. He won it fair and square unlike "W", who won on a technicality...he didn't win the "popular vote" but did win the "electoral college." That still bugs me.

I hadn't planned on writing this blog, but I saw one of the bloggers on this site refer to him as that and it's just PLAIN WRONG. It's like not acknowledging when the first Black or Hispanic breaks a glass ceiling or wins a major event. When Georgetown's John Thompson won his first NCAA championship, announcers acknowledged that he was the "first." That was important.

To not use the terms "Mr. President" or "President", but instead "Mr. Obama" cheapens the most coveted office in the land. It basically sends a message to our children that he is not worthy of the designation when he was elected in a landslide victory. I don't care if people don't like him. I had to put up with Presidents I didn't like for 8 long years. I never referred to them as Mr. Bush. The people elected him, give "President Obama" his proper adieu.

Irma: I don't think of this site as a place of formality either. This site allows us to share ideas and info on our minds that we normally couldn't say in public. I do understand your position. It's just that when grown black men were referred to as "boy," back during slavery times...that was just a total disrespect to our brothers, fathers, etc.

I just get that the same feeling and outrage when it comes to media. It just feels to me that they don't want to give him the proper respect, courtesy... nothing. So when I hear black people call the President, "Mr." it's like they are justifying his disrespect. Would you call the Pope, Johnny?

Hallelujah Sister Marsh,

My sentiments as well. This isn't Ms. Jackson if you're nasty, but it's Mr. President because he's worthy of respect since he occupies the highest office in the land.

"I" am so guilty of this...I offer no excuse for this. to me it makes him seem more like a person rather than a thing....

Actually when I hear reporters calling him Mr. it gives me such pleasure of just how defeated they feel when they can not / will not say , "President Obama" in such a formal position as in a report...in a formal setting I would never refer to our president as Mr., but President...

On, this site community "I" never consider it a place of formality...again no excuse just my out look.(smile)
