The Queen's Chair: There's No Rule On How To Write

I am part of a Monday night writer's group. We meet twice a month, teach each other lessons on writing, and then read our pages of our works in progress.

This week, one of my partners shared what he learned from author ernest Hemingway's book on writing. So I thought I'd share it with you.

There's no rule on how to write. Sometimes, it comes easily and perfect. Sometimes it's like drilling rock and then blasting it out with charges. I love to write, but it has never gotten any easier to do and you can't expect it to if you keep trying for something better than you can do.

As a writer, you should not judge. You should understand.

You see I'm trying in all my stories to get the feeling of the actual life across-- not just depict life-- or criticize it, but to actually make it alive. So that when you have read something by me you actually experience the thing.

Hemingway on Being Critiqued:

I like to have Gertrude Stein bawl me out because it keeps one's opinion of oneself down-- way down. She liked the book very much she said. But what I wanted to hear about what she didn't like and why.

Hemingway On Writer's Block:

I would stand and look out over the roofs of Paris and think, "Do not worry. You have always written before and you will write now. All you have to do is write one true sentence. Write the truest sentence you know." So finally I would write one true sentence and go on from there. If I started to write more elaborately, or like someone introducing or presenting something, I found that I could cut that scrollwork or ornament out and throw it away and start with the first true simple sentence I had written. (A Moveable Feast)

I recommend reading this book. Ernest Hemingway on Writing edited by Larry W. Phillips (Scribner Press).

It's amazing on what I learn from my partners. Stephen King's book on writing is excellent. I highly recommend that one. Did you get my book?

Ahhhh...yes I did!

I have it right here in front of me.

"Love Begins With Truth".

I have a vacation coming up so I will have a chance to read it. Can't wait!

Don't laugh at me, Irma. I literally had to make a deal with my whole family. There's an organization in our area called Writers & Books and they offered a class called "Writing The Novel In A Year." I had the idea for my first book and didn't know quite exactly what to do with it. We had class one Saturday a month from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. We were required to write a minimum of 30 pages and had to send our completed pages to others to critique. My family bristled at first, but they agreed. I finished the first draft of my novel in that class and everyone was surprised how mature it was.

These days, I write in the mornings from 6:30 to 10 a.m. My kids are in school...no interruptions. I don't answer the phone, but I sometimes listen to the radio. I can get a lot done. I always sketch out a handwritten outline complete with characters names, other characters, and I read while writing. I get inspiration from magazine articles, people's conversations, I dream character scenes and dialogue...etc. Writing what you know is so true. Especially for a first book. Currently, I'm doing final edits for my next book Pin Pals about five very different women on a bowling team Think of it as Steel Magnolias meets the AMF Bowling Lanes. (wink)

For me, there's nothing scary than staring at a blank computer screen. And frankly, my one regret when I was in the hospital was that I hadn't finished any of these books. I now have 2 down and have 4 more to go...

If there is something, you're passionate about, just do it. Or in this case, write it.

BTW: My second book, Win Win, is out next month and my publication party is on April 24th. :)

I forgot to answer one part of your question, sorry... I had always wanted to write my first novel in my 20s, but my magazine writing career took off. I did a lot of entertainment and celebrity profiles. The next thing I knew, I had a BIG birthday coming up, but hadn't produced a novel. I decided that I had put this off for too long and made the decision to do it. I never thought I'd write more than one book...let alone people liking my stuff and wanting more. All I have to say is God is good. :)

AMEN!!!

God IS Good!!!
