The Queen's Chair: Goodbye, Springfield

Marsha Jones · Monday, April 19th 2010 at 1:22PM · 183 views
(Queen's Note: April is National Poetry Month. Mood Makers Books, in Rochester, New York, hosted its ninth annual "Poetry on the Wall" contest and two of my poems were selected. "Goodbye, Springfield" was one of them. Thought I'd share this with you.)

After 76 years on the airwaves,
The Guiding Light vanished.
I'm in mourning.

Half my life; that show was on.
Sharing obstacles, adventures,
watching love in the afternoon

Beth and Phillip; Josh and Reva,
Billy and Vanessa; Buzz and Lillian
Friday's cliff hangers and wishes for Monday's speedy aarival.
When I couldn't watch, I checked up on my friends
via the newspaper, on-line and finally DVRed them.

Alan's death and oooooohhh ....can't stand Roger Thorpe
There's Laurel Falls and Company.
Mindy finally changed; Bert Bauer's memorable 4th of July Barbecues
No one in town could refuse her food.
God, rest her soul.

Our world has changed...no more soaps on Daytime TV.
What or who will be the next casualty?
More women working; no one stays home.
Two household incomes helps make ends meet.

Goodbye, Springfield; Adios Guiding Light
I'll miss my life-long friends, but thanks for the memories.
What a sad way to end.
