The Queen's Chair: Happy (Almost) Birthday
My youngest child turns double digits this week; she is so excited. I waited for her to come down the stair this morning. When she got to the bottom of the stairs, she stared at me funny. "Aren't you forgetting to say something?"she replied folding her arms while glaring at me more.
"It's not your birthday," I replied. (Believe me, I'll never forget that day.)
"I know, but you could say, "Happy almost Birthday," she replied.
I was speechless and smiled. Silently, I thought to myself I was NEVER this excited about turning double digits.
My spring baby ran down the hall to get her school clothes.
When she came back, I curled her hair and listened to her rattle off her birthday wish list: a cookie cake for school, cupcakes for her lacrosse team, and dinner at her favorite restaurant for ribs. I reminded her to take her alto sax to school and that her lesson was at noon.
As she laced up her sneakers, grabbed her backpack, and music case, she stood at the door to get her "mommy" kiss. I kissed her on the forehead and she kissed me on the cheek. "Mommy, I love you," she said. "Have a good day."
Watching her walk off the front porch, I kind of wished my baby wouldn't grow. Double digits. More milestones are coming. I know that, too. Can't believe a decade has already passed. I enjoy these "mommy" moments; won't ever forget them.
