The Queen's Chair: Today Is Flag Day

I didn't know that. I knew there was a flag today, but it's not really something I celebrate. My daughter's school does. Her school has a big ceremony; when she was younger I would come in as her room parent and we would do all types of arts and crafts. Now that she is older; we don't do it. It fell off my radar.

I also didn't know there were rules for the flag's usage. You aren't supposed to use the flag in advertisements, as a costume, it can only be hung upside down during a war in time of distress... it's a long list.

Many of us hate what the flag represents, but I'm not one of them. I can't imagine living anywhere else in the world. As a Caribbean-American woman, I have free speech through my words whether verbal and written, am aloud to own things, can pursue a living and earn money, make my own reproductive decisions, and obtained an education. There are so many places in the world where I can't do that.

With that said, I may not agree with things done or said in this country, I'm happy I have the right to voice my opinion. That's what the flag represents to me. Happy Flag Day.

You are so right. I went to pick up papers from my daughter's school and I walked into a group of people holding a flag ceremony. There were veterans there and they were outside. It was probably the only time I didn't fuss because the handicap parking spots were right there and I couldn't park. I just turned down my music and grabbed a close spot on the side of the sdchool building. :)

I felt like it was a holiday...now I know why. Flag Day is a excellent tribute to U.S.FLAG!
