The Strength of A Black Woman
|
Posted By: Vernell Gore on March 14, 2009 I grew up in the 60's. A child born right in the transition of the Civil Rights movement at work. I remember when Dr. Martin Luther King was ****, President Robert Kennedy was shot and the merging of schools toward intergration. Most importantly I remember times with my Mom. I remember seeing a strong black woman take a stand for her family that many times left her out of possession her own dreams. She stood many times in the background letting my Dad be lifted up and promoted in his community and church. At first as a young woman it bothered me. I felt why did she have to give up her life in order for him to be fulfilled in his. But then I gathered that from her generation that was how they did it. The family in the black community meant more than serving self. It was about caring, reaching out to neighbors, picking butter beans all day and giving bushels to neighbors who didn't have. It meant going to the neighbors and cleaning the house of the bedbound. They in the past called that missionary work now its called nursing assistants. African American woman in my eyes have had to be strong. We are often judged harshly as too strong, too outspoken, too dramatic, too emotional but if you look at many successful black men, some of them make it with the influence of a strong black woman. We celebrate our own, we support our men and we love our culture. One day I believe it will be seen just how strong we have been as a source in the black community. There are some memories of old, history already unfolded that told of strong black women and how they played such a strong role in the liberation of our people but I still don't think many get it. Because we would not be called the "names" we hear. We would be seen as the jewel we really are to the black community. And embraced in our own beautiful (indwardly and outwardly) beauty and covered.
