THE DEATH OF A DREAM
|
Posted By: Gigi Lee on May 20, 2009 What happens when you let your Dreams Die? I remember a poem that I read when I was a child called “A Dream Deferred” by Langston Hughes: What happens to a dream deferred? Does it dry up Like a raisin in the sun? Or fester like a sore— And then run? Does it stink like rotten meat? Or crust and sugar over— like a syrupy sweet? Maybe it just sags Like a heavy load. Or does it explode? When I read the poem as a child, I had many dreams. I know that I would never let my dreams defer. As I gotten older the light on my dreams became dimmer until there was no life left. My dreams where replace with the reality of having to work a 9 to 5. I became a zombie, like a large percent of people working jobs they don’t like. I’d wake up, go to work, put up with crap from who every happened to be the boss at that time, put in my eight plus hours, just to do it all over again the next day. I became the kind of person I despised. Like a lot of people, I was living a life of quite desperation. I would say to myself so many times, "there has to be more to life then this". But how do you take control of your own destiny? How do you get back your freedom when you’ve been on the “Rat Race" trade mill for so long? I sat down and did some soul searching. First I realized that I had to stop making excuses and stop telling myself lies, (As long as I have a job and able to pay my bills I’m happy) I also realized that pursuing your dreams is going to take hard work, FAITH, dedication, commitment, focus, drive and the ability to keep going when things just don’t seem to be working. So, I’ve decide to resurrect my dreams. I encourage you to do the same. This is what I promise you. • I promise, it will be hard, but the rewards in the end will be worth it. • I promise, there will be times when you can’t see the light at the end of the tunnel, but you can’t QUIT, because you’re closer than you think. • I promise, you might have to be your own cheer leader, but that’s ok. When you start to see the fruits of your labor others will come around. No more dreams deferred. I am here to encourage you to make your DREAMS a reality. So let’s do it together.
