Black Filmmakers and the Recession/Depression

Posted By: Hisani DuBose on July 03, 2009 Hello Everyone, I haven't posted in a while, trying to keep things moving. It has always been difficult for Black filmmakers to raise capital for their movies. Now multiply that by 100. Its not hopeless. We have to be extremely creative. Don't focus on theatrical release. The chances of your movie getting the coverage and promotion it needs are very slim since it costs studios $40M or more to advertise and promote a movie in theatrical release. If you're not a major player they won't spend that type of money on your movie. At best you'll get limited release which seldom makes enough to recoup expenses. Explore the internet, VOD and direct to DVD/BlueRay. Have your marketing/promotion plan in place so when you approach potential investors you can clearly show how their money will be recouped. Above all else, make sure you have a strong story and tight script. Too many indie filmmakers are heavy on the tech side and short on the story side. For those thinking about investing, see if the script excits you then look at the plan for selling the movie. We need investors otherwise our stories won't be told. We have so many stories that exceed crime, ****, etc. Let's be about action and planning, not just talk!
