Virginia State University Receives $50 Million Gift From MacKenzie Scott
|
Posted By: Reginald Culpepper on October 30, 2025 Virginia State University is proud to announce that it has received the largest single donor gift in its 143-year history. Author and philanthropist MacKenzie Scott has gifted $50 million to the University, marking her second historic contribution to VSU in just five years. Virginia State University will use the funds to expand its efforts to transform lives through education and continue the mission outlined in the University’s strategic plan. The gift will provide students with broader opportunities by focusing on academic excellence, innovation, and holistic student success, encompassing leadership development, experiential learning, and career readiness. “Ms. Scott’s generosity and trust in our mission will change the trajectory of Virginia State University for generations to come,” said VSU President Dr. Makola M. Abdullah. "Her investment allows us to continue to build upon our legacy of excellence and expand our reach to more students who deserve access to a world-class education. For 143 years, VSU has stood as a beacon of opportunity, and with this transformational gift, our future shines even brighter.” MacKenzie Scott’s latest donation underscores her continued commitment to advancing educational equity and supporting institutions that create meaningful impact in their communities. In 2020, Scott donated $30 million to VSU as part of her national philanthropic effort to invest in Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). “This gift speaks to the confidence Ms. Scott has in the extraordinary work happening at Virginia State University,” said Dr. Willis Walter, Interim Vice President for External Relations. “Her continued partnership highlights how philanthropy can serve as a powerful catalyst for change. We are deeply grateful for her belief in our vision and the difference this investment will make in the lives of our students.” Scott’s philanthropy has focused on organizations demonstrating exceptional leadership, strong community impact, and a proven commitment to equity. Through her giving, she has donated billions to colleges, universities, and nonprofits across the nation, empowering them to advance access and opportunity. “MacKenzie Scott’s support reminds us that when you invest in Virginia State University, you are investing in the next generation of leaders, innovators, and change-makers,” Dr. Abdullah added. “This gift will help ensure that Greater continues to Happen Here.” If you enjoyed this article, Join BlackInAmerica.com today for similar content and opportunities via email! |
