Pontiff on Middle East: 'What harms them, harms all of humanity'

After praying the Angelus, Pontiff Leo calls for an end to **** around the world, urging everyone to persevere in prayer because “we cannot remain silent in the face of the suffering of so many people, innocent victims of these conflicts.” By Kielce Gussie

Despite the rainy weather in Rome, thousands of pilgrims still gathered in St. Peter’s Square to recite the Angelus with Pontiff Leo XIV.

Following the prayer, the Pontiff expressed his deep concern for the ongoing situation in the Middle East, as well as other areas of the world “torn apart by war and ****.” He stressed that “we cannot remain silent in the face of the suffering of so many people, innocent victims of these conflicts.”

This continuous **** wounds everyone—“what harms them, harms all of humanity.”

Pontiff Leo warned that the pain, death, and suffering brought about by these wars “are a **** to the entire human family and a cry before God.” He then encouraged everyone to persevere in their prayer so that “hostilities may cease and paths of peace, based on sincere dialogue and respect for the dignity of every human being, may finally open.”

As the Pontiff made this appeal, reports on the rising death toll in the Middle East continue to emerge, as **** enters its 23rd day. More than 1,000 people are believed to have been **** in Lebanon, at least 160 people have been injured in Iraninan **** strikes in Israeli towns early Sunday morning, and in the Gulf, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain have reported a number of drones and missiles in their airspace. In Iran, the death toll is reported around 1,444 and more than 18,000 injured.

Before imparting his Apostolic Blessing, the Pontiff also greeted the thousands of runners participating in the Rome Marathon—running through the heart of Rome at the same time. Seeing so many athletes from a variety of countries “is a sign of hope”, he exclaimed, expressing his wish that sports can “create paths of peace, social inclusion, and spirituality.”

Custody of The Holy Land: ‘Prayer continues uninterruptedly’

In the midst of the **** in the Middle East, the Custody of the Holy Land invites people around the world to spiritually join in the prayers "so that war and **** may cease, and that the paths of dialogue, diplomacy, and politics...may be walked with courage and responsibility." by Vatican News

Despite access to the Basilica of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem being restricted for security reasons, "prayer continues uninterruptedly in the Holy Places."

This is what the Custody of the Holy Land reported in a statement, highlighting that celebrations, rituals, daily processions, and liturgical prayers have never ceased "day or night."

Come Together In Prayer Againt ****

"Our centuries-old presence in the places of Redemption and the prayer raised there every day is on behalf of the entire Church and for the good of all humanity," the statement reads.

"In particularly dramatic moments, like the ones we are living through, [this presence and prayer] seek to make evident the faith, hope, and prayers of every baptized person, so that from these holy places, a prayer for peace and reconciliation between the peoples continues to rise."

Regarding whether Holy Week celebrations will be held, the friars of the Custody of the Holy Land explain that at this time "it is not possible to make predictions".

The Custody is in constant dialogue with the competent authorities and with other churches responsible for the Holy Sepulcher. Therefore, they invite all the faithful to join in prayer "so that war and **** may cease, and that the paths of dialogue, diplomacy, and politics— the only ways capable of building just and lasting peace—may be walked with courage and responsibility."

**** to Italian TV: "Free, respectful information is a tool for peace."

**** Leo highlights the "important mission" of the media in a time of change and of "words too often shouted on the web" in a message to Tgcom24, an Italian television network, on the occasion of its 25th anniversary. by Vatican News

**** Leo XIV sent a brief message encapulsating the core principles of what true information should be to the director and editorial team of Tgcom24—an Italian television network operated by the company Mediaset—on the 25th anniversary of their founding.

Dialogue And Respect

In the message, the **** looked to the present times, marked by "significant changes and words too often shouted on the web." In such a context, he wrote, "the important mission" of the media emerges: to "build bridges of dialogue," promoting deeper understanding.

This involves, as **** Leo XIV explained, "a narrative that does not stop at the surface of the news but knows how to look with respect, solidarity, and compassion at the margins of suffering."

Truth And Responsibility

Central to the papal message is the call for truth and a "deep sense of ethical responsibility," so as to counter "the spread of ****" and promote "a culture of encounter" that can "unite the different parts" of society.

For Unarmed And Persevering Peace

In his text there is also a strong invitation for "free and respectful information that upholds human dignity," as it becomes "a powerful tool" to embark on the journey "towards an unarmed and persevering peace."

GreenAccord Forum: Telling The Climate Crisis Without Losing Hope

At the GreenAccord Forum in Treviso, journalists reflect on how to report the climate crisis without paralysing audiences, as this year’s media award goes to Covering Climate Now. By Francesca Merlo – Treviso, Italy

The 17th GreenAccord International Forum has drawn to a close in Treviso, Northen Italy. The numerous conversations that have taken centre stage over the last few days have left behind a vital question: the issue is not only how we respond to the climate crisis, it is also about how we tell it.

Central to this reflection here at GreenAccord but also worldwide is Santiago Sáez, Director of Training at Covering Climate Now and recipient of this year’s GreenAccord International Media Award. His recognition comes at a moment that he describes as being “very difficult, globally” for journalists. In the climate story he describes it as a moment that is both urgent and increasingly contested.

“We’re very grateful,” he tells Vatican News on the sidelines of the event. “But we accept it on behalf of journalists everywhere…this is probably the most important story of our generation.”

One of the trickiest aspects of his work, and a mistake he himself admits to having made, is working out how to report on the climate emergency without overwhelming audiences or leaving them paralysed. “It is a tricky topic,” he admits. But the solution, he continues, is not to soften the truth, bur rather to change the way it is told, focusing on solutions.

Sáez goes on to describe what he calls a three-pillared approach, which consists in a style of reporting that is local, human, and oriented towards solutions. Climate change, when it is framed only in global or abstract terms, risks becoming distant and something that happens elsewhere, or risks happening in a future that seems too far away to grasp. But when it grounded in lived experience, it becomes immediate.

Holy See Calls For Increased Inclusion of People With Down Syndrome

Archbishop Ettore Balestrero, Permanent Observer of the Holy See to the United Nations and Other International Organizations in Geneva, insists that persons with Down syndrome possess the same dignity and sacred value as any other person, and underscores that "discriminatory and eugenic practices linked to prenatal screening and the selective termination of pregnancies targeting babies diagnosed with Down syndrome must be firmly rejected." By Deborah Castellano Lubov

"Persons with Down syndrome are more than a diagnosis, more than a condition, and certainly more than the limits others may imagine. All of them, like all of us, possess the same inherent dignity and sacred value, intentionally and lovingly imprinted by the Creator from the very first moment of conception."

Archbishop Ettore Balestrero, Apostolic Nuncio and Permanent Observer of the Holy See to the United Nations and Other International Organizations in Geneva, gave this reminder on Thursday at a side event of the Jérôme Lejeune Foundation for World Down Syndrome Day 2026.

The theme for this year's Day, which takes place Saturday, 21 March, is "From Loneliness to Inclusion: Valuing Human Genetic Diversity to Enable the Effective Realization of Rights for Persons with Down Syndrome."

Full members of communities with same fundamental rights
In his remarks, Archbishop Balestrero stressed that persons with Down syndrome, "like everyone else, hold the same fundamental rights."

Accordingly, he explained, inclusion is not "merely a matter of providing services or accommodations," but a matter of "recognizing persons with Down syndrome as full members of our communities."

Must Firmly Reject Practices Targeting Diagnosed Babies

The Apostolic Nuncio called on the event participants and organizers to be encouraged to "reaffirm our unwavering efforts to promote and defend the inherent dignity, fundamental rights, and transcendent value of all persons at every stage of life," as he renewed an impassioned appeal.

"Discriminatory and eugenic practices linked to prenatal screening and the selective termination of pregnancies targeting babies diagnosed with Down syndrome," he said, "must be firmly rejected."

Archbishop Balestrero also acknowledged and thanked the many professionals and institutions around the world that are committed to the continuing care for persons with Down syndrome and their families.

Quality of Life Dependent On Love

With this sentiment, the Archbishop reaffirmed the importance of love, humanity and heartfelt concern.

"A system of care and support may be operationally perfect, but if it is heartless, it becomes cold and impersonal," he said, recalling when **** Leo XIV reminded that the quality of human life is not dependent on achievements, but on love.

Stressing that the value of a person’s life should not be measured by utility or performance, but by the simple and profound fact of being human, the Permanent Observer concluded, "May our collective efforts continue to build a culture of life and humanity where every person with Down syndrome is recognized as unique and unrepeatable, and welcomed with equal dignity and respect."

Tutela Minorum Reaffirms Guidelines, Highlights Emerging Forms of Abuse

The Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors concludes its Spring Assembly, reaffirming safeguarding as central to the Church’s mission under the leadership of **** Leo XIV. by Vatican News

The Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors concluded its Spring Plenary Assembly in Rome on Friday, marking five days of reflection, dialogue, and planning focused on strengthening safeguarding practices across the universal Church.

Gathering Members and staff from around the world, the Assembly centred its work on enhancing engagement with victims and survivors, advancing global safeguarding standards, and reinforcing collaboration at every level of ecclesial life.

At the opening of proceedings, participants expressed “deep gratitude to **** Leo XIV for his leadership in reaffirming the central mission of safeguarding the dignity of every child, adolescent and vulnerable person entrusted to the Church’s care.”

A Shared Responsibility In Challenging Times

In a context marked by ongoing global conflict and its impact on the most vulnerable, the Assembly reflected on the need for renewed commitment and cooperation.

Commission President Monsignor Thibault Verny highlighted “the need for attentive listening, humility, and shared responsibility,” echoing the ****’s encouragement to accompany local Churches as they strengthen safeguarding cultures and structures.

Contributions from experts and partner initiatives underlined both the complexity of safeguarding challenges and the importance of collaboration between Church and civil society actors. Members highlighted the urgency of fostering “an open, collaborative spirit” capable of responding effectively to these realities.

Listening To Victims And Survivors

A central focus of the Assembly was the role of victims and survivors in shaping the Church’s safeguarding efforts.

Members reviewed trauma-informed procedures and examined how testimony can more consistently inform policy, training, and reporting. They reiterated that engagement with victims and survivors “is not an isolated aspect of safeguarding but the central reference point for every action.”

Pontiff Leo Welcomes King and Queen of Spain to Rome

The Pontiff meets with King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia at the Apostolic Palace before the monarchs made their way to the Basilica of Saint Mary Major, where the king was granted the title of Protocanon of the Chapter of the Liberian Basilica. by Vatican News

Pontiff Leo XIV on Friday received King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia of Spain in a private audience in the Apostolic Palace. Then, according to a statement from the Holy See Press Office, the royal couple met with Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin and Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, Secretary for Relations with States and International Organizations.

The statement reported that at the heart of the discussions were “the good relations between the Holy See and Spain, which will see a significant moment in the Holy Father’s forthcoming Apostolic Journey.” Attention was also given to several current issues concerning the country's situation and the Church's mission in society.

Among the topics shared was also “the importance of a constant commitment to supporting peace” and the strengthening of the principles and values that form the basis of international coexistence.

A Special Title Given

After leaving the Vatican, the royal couple proceeded to the Basilica of Saint Mary Major, where King Felipe VI was granted the title of Protocanon of the Chapter of the Liberian Basilica - one of the four papal basilicas in Rome. He formally took possession of this title in a ceremony presided over by the basilica’s archpriest, the Lithuanian Cardinal Rolandas Makrickas, with the participation of the Spanish canon Jaime Brosel. The Cardinal Archpriest and twelve Canons make up the Liberian Chapter of this Basilica.

According to a press release by the Holy See Press Office, the Basilica of St. Mary Major has long had ties with the Spanish monarchy. For centuries, Spanish rulers, ecclesiastics, and faithful have been supporters of the Basilica. For example, the gilded wooden ceiling was commissioned by **** Alexander VI, the former Cardinal Rodrigo Borgia and the Archpriest of the Basilica.

Amazonian Church Holds Ecclesial Conference To Foster Synodality, Pluriculturality

The Ecclesial Conference of the Amazonia renews its presidency for the 2026–2030 period, consolidating a synodal ecclesial path in which diverse vocations, ministries, and cultures converge at the service of life in the Amazon Region. By Johan Pacheco

Inspired by the biblical text, “I am about to do something new; even now it is springing forth. Do you not perceive it?” (Is 43:19), the Ecclesial Conference of the Amazon (CEAMA) is holding its 6th General Assembly from March 16 to 19, electing a new presidency for the 2026–2030 period and renewing its missionary and synodal commitments in the Amazonian territories.

The new presidency of CEAMA is composed of Cardinal Leonardo Steiner, OFM, of the Archdiocese of Manaus (Brazil), as president; and the vice presidents: Fr. Jesús Huamán, of the Apostolic Vicariate of Puerto Maldonado (Peru); Juan Urañavi, of the Apostolic Vicariate of Ñuflo de Chávez (Bolivia); Marva Joy Hawksworth, of the Diocese of Georgetown (Guyana); and Sr. Sônia Maria Pinho de Matos, of the Archdiocese of Manaus (Brazil).

“We are gathered in Bogotá, Colombia, at the CEAMA Assembly, the Ecclesial Church of the Amazon,” Cardinal Leonardo Steiner told Vatican News. “We are reflecting on our mission, deepening the question of our mission, and we are also seeking some common horizons for the action of our particular Churches, our dioceses, our prelatures, our vicariates. It is a path we are undertaking, and we wish to give it continuity.”

He said the General Assembly also saw the election of a new presidency, “to give continuity to that dream of **** Francis to go to the Churches of the Amazonia and to be an ecclesial Church. We want to carry forward that dream of **** Francis, implementing especially the four dreams he addressed to us in Querida Amazonia. We take into consideration the social question, the cultural question, the ecological question, and also, naturally, our ecclesial situation.”

“This way of being Church is deeply synodal and missionary. May God bless us, and may Our Lady of the Amazon always accompany us,” he said.

The diversity of members of the new presidency offers a concrete sign of the synodality that drives CEAMA, a Church that walks together, values the diversity of gifts, and allows itself to be challenged by the reality of the territory. It is also a living expression of the dream of a Church with an Amazonian face, where interculturality, participation, and shared responsibility are fundamental pillars.

Marva Joy Hawksworth, Vice President of CEAMA

Representing the laity of the Amazon, Marva Joy Hawksworth, of the Diocese of Georgetown (Guyana), was elected vice president of CEAMA. Belonging to the Macushi people, she was born in the community of Tipuru, in southern Rupununi, where she has developed much of her educational and community vocation.

“These last few days have been very informative and very interactive,” she said in an interview with Vatican News. “I have learned a great deal, and I have become involved and participated in everything that has happened. It has been a wonderful time here, and today, I was elected Vice President. And that was a surprise to me; it was an absolute surprise. I know it is a great office, that it is an enormous responsibility that I am taking on, but I also know that I am not alone.”

Her ministry has been centered in rural and indigenous contexts, where she has promoted an intercultural education that strengthens the identity, language, and traditions of indigenous peoples. Her pedagogical work has been characterized by integrating ancestral knowledge and contemporary methodologies, generating meaningful educational processes for the new generations.

Amazonia And Communication

The Prefect of the Dicastery for Communication, Dr. Paolo Ruffini, spoke during the assembly, emphasizing the communicative role of the Church in the Amazon.

Pontiff’s Worldwide Prayer Network Promulgates New General Regulations

The Pontiff’s Worldwide Prayer Network promulgates its new General Regulations on March 19, feast of St. Joseph, offering an updated version of the body’s identity, mission and structure. By Vatican News

On Thursday, March 19 the ****’s Worldwide Prayer Network (PWPN) promulgated its new General Regulations.

A statement released by the body says the document “offers an organic and updated vision of the identity, mission, and structure” and emphasizes the PWPN’s nature as not “just another movement within the Church” but “a universal network at the direct service of the pontiff and of all those who join him through bonds of prayer and service.”

The statement highlights that the date of the promulgation on the feast of St. Joseph, “is not accidental,” as he is the patron saint of the Society of Jesus, to which the **** has entrusted the apostolic administration of this Pontifical Work.

Its service is carried out through the Vatican Foundation based in Rome and through a network of 22 million people present in more than 90 countries.

Mission rooted in the Heart of Jesus

The statement underlines that the new Regulations define the PWPN as a Pontifical Apostolic Work and Vatican Foundation “at the ecclesial service of the Holy See.”

It notes that the PWPN’s purpose is to mobilize Christians to respond—through prayer, spiritual formation, and service—to the challenges of humanity and of the Church’s mission, as discerned and expressed monthly in the ****’s prayer intentions.

Father Cristóbal Fones, SJ, International Director of the PWPN, said that the publication of the General Regulations is “a constant reminder of the mission that the Holy Father has entrusted to us and to which we seek to remain faithful throughout the world.”

The mission of the network is grounded in the spirituality of the Heart of Jesus and finds in the formative itinerary The Way of the Heart its central pedagogical reference. This aims to unite intimacy with Christ with concrete commitment through prayer and thus help be more open to the issues of the world.

The statement also says that as heir to the historic Apostleship of Prayer, the PWPN harmonizes in the new Regulations its tradition with contemporary challenges.

The document offers guidelines to help the network and its members “walk together” - in coherence with the definitive Statutes approved in 2024 - and establishes a normative framework with an initial validity of two years, until its planned review in 2028.

Cardinal Gugerotti: Give To Avoid Being Complicit With Those Who Set World Ablaze

The Prefect of the Dicastery for the Eastern Churches explains what the Good Friday Collection means in today’s context of war: “For those who have lost everything in those lands, it is a matter of survival. As Christians, it is our duty to restore hope.”
By Stefano Leszczynski

As every year, on Good Friday there will be a collection of offerings destined for the Holy Land—an important initiative of solidarity by the universal Church in support of the Churches and Christian communities of the Holy Land.

This year, the collection takes place in a context of war that seems to be spreading quickly, generating dramatic consequences for everyone in the region.

In a letter addressed to the entire Catholic Church to encourage contributions to the traditional Collecta pro Terra Sancta (Good Friday Collection), Cardinal Claudio Gugerotti, the Prefect of the Dicastery for the Eastern Churches, denounced the unceasing roar of weapons and invited everyone to reflect, so as not to become complicit with those who are setting the world on fire.

“I have the impression that most of the world does not realize the catastrophe that is striking our civilization. Those who promote war today are destroying everything that has been built since the Second World War,” the cardinal stressed, “I am not speaking only of ideals, but also of people and things—even historical monuments of immense value.”

Pontiff Convokes Presidents of Bishops’ Conferences For Meeting On Families

Ten years after its publication, Pontiff Leo XIV praises the “valuable teachings” of Amoris Laetitia, and convokes presidents of Bishops’ Conferences to Rome in October 2026 for a meeting to discuss ways to proclaim the Gospel to families today. By Joseph Tulloch & Devin Watkins

A decade ago, Pontiff Francis published Amoris Laetitia, the Apostolic Exhortation on “love in the family," inspired by the Synods of Bishops of 2014 and 2015.

In a letter published on Wednesday, March 19, Pontiff Leo XIV praised the document as a “luminous message of hope regarding conjugal love and family life."

The 2016 Exhortation “encouraged reflection and pastoral conversion in the Church,” the Pontiff wrote, and “offers valuable teachings that we must continue to examine today.”

READ THE FULL TEXT OF THE PONTIFF’S MESSAGE HERE

Meeting Scheduled for October

In his letter, Pontiff Leo noted that we live in an era of “rapid changes,” including with regard to the family.

In light of these changes, the Pontiff announced he has decided to convene a meeting of the presidents of Bishops’ Conferences for a meeting in Rome in October 2026.

The Pontiff said the event will provide an opportunity “to proceed, in mutual listening, to a synodal discernment on the steps to be taken in order to proclaim the Gospel to families today, in light of Amoris Laetitia and taking into account what is currently being done in the local Churches.”

New Pastoral Methods

In his letter, Pontiff Leo described Amoris Laetitia as one of two Apostolic Exhortations since the Second Vatican Council which had “strengthened the Church’s doctrinal and pastoral commitment” to the service of families—the other being Pontiff John Paul II’s Familiaris Consortio, published in 1981.

What Pontiff Francis had realized, Pontiff Leo wrote, is that “anthropological and cultural changes” in the family required “mutual listening” within the people of God, an insight which led him to call the Synods of Bishops on the family and, eventually, to write Amoris Laetitia.

What Pontiff Francis understood, said Pontiff Leo, was “it is not possible to speak about the family without engaging families themselves, listening to their joys and their hopes, their sorrows and their anguish.”

He thanked God for “the stimulus that has encouraged reflection and pastoral conversion in the Church.”

The family forms the basis of society, offering a “school for human enrichment,” he said, quoting the Second Vatican Council document Gaudium et Spes.

“Through the sacrament of marriage, Christian spouses form a kind of ‘domestic church,’ whose role is essential for teaching and transmitting the faith,” said the Pontiff.

However, he added, much in society has changed over the past several decades, which led to **** Francis urging the 2015 Synod of Bishops to listen to the Holy Spirit and to families’ hopes, joys, sorrows, and anguish.

Proclaiming Gospel Of The Family To Younger Generations

Amoris Laetitia, said Pontiff Leo, offers valuable teachings on the biblical hope of God’s loving and merciful presence amid family crises; the call for marriage to always give life within the family; and the need for contemporary pastoral methods that help parents educate children and find depth of spirituality in their family life.

He called on the Church to find new ways to “evoke the beauty of the vocation to marriage precisely in the recognition of fragility,” so as to serve the mission of proclaiming the Gospel of the family to younger generations.

“We must also support families, especially those suffering from the many forms of poverty and **** present in contemporary society,” he said.

Pontiff Leo XIV concluded his letter on Amoris Laetitia by urging the Church to renew and deepen her commitment to the family, so that married couples may “fully live out their conjugal love, and that young people may feel attracted, within the Church, to the beauty of the vocation to marriage.”
