The Importance of Movies From Black Filmmakers

Posted By: Hisani DuBose on July 29, 2008 The first thing that must be realized is that independent filmmakers are entrepreneurs. Not all of us see ourselves that way but we are. We are not asking investors to become part of our projects because we need money, it is an opportunity- a business deal where everyone involved can increase their income. This is important to understand because we are part of an industry that can change lives. Not all independent Black filmmakers are on top of their game but many are. Audiences crave our movies, our stories. Not all of the movies are about Black people necessarily but the stories are told from our perspective. Don't you want to see stories about us winning, overcoming obstacles, solving problems, coming of age, etc? Every few years stories like this surface but they are far and few between. So how do we change this and the images of us that are projected to the world? We as indie filmmakers must educate our people or anyone willing to listen, about the process of getting involved as an investor. A good independent movie's budget can range from $500,000.00 to $5,000,000.00. Do these numbers scare you? They shouldn't. This does not mean that you have to sell your house to become and investor.
