Ignorance.

Ignorance.
Posted By: Chamieka House on July 30, 2008

How do you deal with other African-American`s ignorance towards other races publicly?
It has happened to me on several occasions and I wished to be ANY other color but black/brown/tan.. whatever.

It makes me feel like White/Asian/Hispanic people don't truly get a chance to embrace our culture when an angry black male/female or teen is coming at them sideways for no reason?

I see this a lot of the bus.. or at school.. or wherever..

It makes me skin totally crawl.. like omg.. Why ME?.. Why US?

(that may be a little scattered.. but hopefully you get my drift :/ )

Do you think this can be evidence of our ancestors' curse. I know the word sounds terrible, but once I accepted I felt better and I understand black people better. Why do you think black people are they way they are. Why do other races treat us the way they do. This doesn't mean that we are inferior, we just have to be more assertive at doing the right thing.

First, understand that we are not under a curse! This is what you call and inequity. The kind of behavior (or sin) that passes down from generation to generation, until or unless each of us decides it's got to stop in our own families! This is bad parenting. It would help if you would touch an older family member, neighbor or friend about the expectations of parents in our rich history. We have a new or a 'sub' culture' that is the product of a practice of voluntary abstentee fatherhood and unprepared and/or careless mothers. Children (who become grownups, eventually) learn basic social skills at home first. They learn how to respect each other, say please, thank you, use a fork, etc. Somehow this new parenting environment has disconnected from our heritage of basic decency and respect! For a start we can encourage people to stop the risk behavior that bring children into the world, that they are not willing to properly parent. And for the ones--out of order-- already in our culture, we can pray that God will allow them into circumstances that wlll teach them discipline. This subject is an argument I take on in my soon to be released book, "Black Men Stop!" An excerpt can be read at www.blackmenstop.com

You deal with it by not acting the way they do. Once they realize that what they're doing is no longer accepted as understandable or "cool" then they will be forced to conform, because the only reason they act that way is because they saw someone else doing it.

I agree with Kevin, you set the example of good upbringing and sense. You NEVER wish you were not your color or race. Be happy and proud that you are you and that you are alive. If you know them and feel comfortable correcting them then do so but dont ever cower in shame, it just proves the point. People act out because they are insecure, or maybe they have been the victims of racism first hand and feel they have to return the jabs. You can't force anyone to do anything but you can lead by example and confidence.
