Post Truamatic Stree Disorder

Post Truamatic Stree Disorder
Posted By: GREGORY GULLEY on August 06, 2008

Group,

What do you know about this illness? As an active duty Marine I've deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq in the past 4 years and find myself more curious than ever to see what the "civilian" community knows about this disorder. Not just civilians but the African American community more specifically. Our sons and duaghters, mothers anf fathers are being impacting by all sorts of things that can now be labled as PTSD. This is a health and wellness group so help me get well.

Gregory...this must really be the business because this is my fourth attempt to answer this blog! I extend to you my sentiments as a Social Worker with some information to share about this subject. First I would like to thank you for serving our country and putting your life on the line in duty of our protection. I'm sure you have seen and experienced some pretty interesting things while deployed in the foreign countries that you were in. Heck we see some interesting stuff right here in the US of A. You are right in your statement that all too often this disorder is ignored or minimized in our community. I don't know what type of help is being offered to you by the military. You should focus on understanding the core of how the stressors effect you in your thought process, your daily life and functioning, physically. Identifying the triggers and the effects of them (in the aforementioned areas of your life) is important as well. Once you understand all of this you will be able to know how to control your response (physically mentally & emotionally). Remember the it's all a chain reaction: physical effects that you experience is the body's response to the mental thought process. The mental peice effects your emotional (the interpretation of what is in your heart). Through the emotional, whatever feeling is interpreted your body starts to respond to it. For example, I am a Christian and have been taught that we have 5 gates (the senses hearing, sight, touch, smell, taste) that can effect us in a positive or negative way. Let's say a person who has been exposed to war and has trouble hearing gun shots suddenly hears what sounds to them as such. The ear gate is the point of entry. Once the sound is heard, thoughts begin to flow as to what this sounds like. It is then interpreted as gun shots and memories of the feelings one felt while in the presence of real gun shots emerge. Then the feelings that were felt during that time, for example fear/flight enter from the emotional perspective. As a result the body reacts by increased heart beat, perspiration and the like. Ultimately a reaction such as fleeing, obtaining cover or retaliation may come forth. Hopefully you can see the continuum of how this can effect every aspect of our beings. This is why it is important to understand all the elements of what I mentioned in the beginning as they hold the key to true deliverance of the experiences and how they effect you. Lastly, being in the moment and realizing where you actually are is also very important. Utilize all those around you - spouse, family and friends who are in your inner circle and care about your well-being to help you in this. Well that's all for now. I wish there were more sentiments from the group on this topic. It could be a reflection of the true need for more education and awareness about Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. May God bless and keep you in your journey to wellness!
