Here we go again

Posted By: Alton Clark on August 08, 2008 This is an issue again that the communities are facing that incur the misconception of race and dress . I hope that you are all in good health and spirit. I send information concerning injustices from time to time to several of you. Well, this morning the situation is out of my home town of Eunice, Louisiana. Yesterday, August 7, more than a dozen African American male students were sent home because they wore their hair in dreadlocks. There is a meeting this morning at the school to discuss the matter. This is not the first issue that Eunice has been behind the rest of the country on. I myself a Eunice High graduate am embarrassed to tell people that it was only a few years ago that school events really became desegregated. When I graduated, in 1997, we had a white prom and a black prom, a white homecoming and a black homecoming, homecoming court consisted of ten slots: six for white females students and four for black female students; this list could continue. What I am asking of you is that you take a few minutes this morning to call the school board and let school board superintendent Michael Nassif know that you support these students and they should be allowed back in school immediately. Hair length guidelines as part of a dress code were actually developed during the 1960s with White students in mind (long hairstyles were popular at the time). It could presumably be used to discriminate against Blacks or Black hairstyles (few Whites wear their hair in braids). In this case, I'm not sure. I'm interested to see how this turns out.

I am saddened by your story on Eunice,La. Please let us know what has happened. Has the NAACP been involved..I would like to help some kind of way..

I know this may make me appear to be the odd man out, but are these boys Rastas and are they wearing their hair like this due to religious purposes? I am not trying to play devils' advocate here, but it may be true that Eunice has some race issues like many other parts of the country, but I really wish that young black males would try to work on their public appearance a little more. Alton, please do not apologize for the truth that is going on in your town , because it is a false illusion that this only happens in the deep south. Davis, Ca is about 12 miles from Sacramento, Ca. a college town where all Black males are rounded up if a 'crime'(you know those Black rapes, etc.) is commited then come to not just Davis or the community college about 2 miles from where I live. This being a political year and a large crack down on illegal workers( mostly fruit trees and cannerys here)until many have turned to selling drugs. There is a drug war going on right now envolving illegals. Mind you, the same illegals they just sent back across the border a few months ago... so what they have done is invent there is a Blood and Crips gange here to justify this war. Oh, well....Me, I am 35 miles north of Sacramento. We do not have nor have we ever had any Black gangs here!!! Only Mexican and Hmong gangs and the police & Sheriff departments know this.....
