Rules For A Black Teenager When Leaving Home...

Posted By: ann cunningham on August 11, 2008 As a single parent of two boys, my eyes was opened to the things I will face. I knew that I would teach them how to be responsible and be a man. Not just any man, but that they was apart of me. I am a christian and I take them to church when I go. I want them to witness the Spirit of the Lord and become a man of God. I say this because they will need the power of the Lord (as all of us do). Which brings me to this... I was riding in the car, and I heard on the radio station (here in Alabama), the that the men on the show taught their teenage boys the rules when they leave home. I knew the rules...be home at a certain time, and watch who you call friends, and by all means use protection-wrong! The rules was in the lines of how to act when you get pulled over, how to respond to the police and how not to catch an attitude. This really hit home.Since I am a single parent and even though their dad is in their lives, I never heard him mention this at all! So I am really rapping my mind on this. It never occurred to me that this will be added to the other rules. Just because they are young and black, they are a target . Some see them as a threat and some people don't want them to succeed. In the session, they went on to say that they will need to look at the officer that is asking the questions in the eye, but not will an attitude. Further more, when he is spoken to answer with a "sir" and no huffing and puffing. To stand straight and not give them a reason to use any other type of physical action. To never have anything "illegal" in the vehicle and to be mindful of what he says and how he says them. Even though this is "never" justifiable, nevertheless; it is going to be apart of life because we are different from others. I don't want this for no person, not even my enemies. Hopefully, these children coming in the next generation really get involved in politics and the law and so much more. However, racism has been here from the beginning, but teaching others how to fight back with the mind and not the fist. I am getting prepared for what is in the future has in store and I hope you do too. Bless you all. It is unfortunate but true. Racial profiling has become a big problem in our society. especially for our young black men. I commend you for addressing this with your young men, preparing them for life. With God in their lives and the tools (manners, respect, instruction,moral values, love and support just to name a few) our young men can be equipped to deal with the repulsion of society.
