Posted By: Tristan Gross on September 08, 2008 Unreachable Me Sometimes I wonder if I should even open my mouth to speak That’s just me, it comes from being young and labeled a geek Tho’ I believe I more resemble a volcano rising in knowledge to reach my intellectual peak Along my trip to the top I have to stop… and tweak my idea of what truth is Cause if your idea of truth is false the world could get ruthless And misquotin’ the truth in whole or in part my brother can leave you straight toothless So of my mind’s collective anthology Creates a problem with interactions between you and me I send you a sincere unbiased apology Or is it you that should be apologizing to me? Now I know I might come off just a bit prideful But ain’t this what my predecessors died for? For me to speak freely and for me to get my ride on Without getting pulled over and having to stare down the barrel of a rifle? And you god to honest justification for putting pistols to our heads Is he’s a young African American with his pants hanging down his legs When ya’ll used to take our belts, hang us from trees and leave us for ****???? Yo give me a minute… I have to clam down from the words I just said Hold on tho my brother why is it that your pants are low enough that I can see your draws Please tell me so I know what to say when I’m defending us all See in their eyes it not only you or me it just ya’ll So together as a collective people we either rise or fall by the wayside If you ask me its past due time to re-evoke our reasons for black pride Because I’d rather trade my life than sit idly by and watch my culture die I try to resurrect it but I’m constantly enduring ridicule from those who won’t even get up and try And that’s another major part of the problem we can’t seem to come together, support one another, and just unify But I can’t become overly concerned with others when it’s hard enough for me to find my own way and light my own fuse Because everyday I battle feelings of being trapped and confused Confined within a system that’s set up for us to lose Every time I read the paper, listen to the radio, or watch the evening news The mass media is trying to convert stereotypes into truths And map out our don’ts do’s Anytime we’re in groups of more than two’s we’re suspected as members of dangerous crews I’m ready to stomp the eggshells we been tiptoeing on for these ignorant fools and their racist views So I stand up as a brother ready to give testimony from the pews in our behalf Cause truth be told they mock our culture and just laugh Or cower in fear of becoming the next **** of the inner city bloodbath Looking down condescendingly on our youth because they struggle with basic math While wandering around blindly with little to no guidance on finding the righteous path Idolizing corporate made heroes in sports stars, hustlers, actors, and those who rap The time is now to recharge the culture with black historical fact and abandon glorious sounding fiction It’s necessary for us to understand where we came from before we can spark a change in our current condition So with the zeal of MLK, Garvey, Paul Bogle, Malcolm X, and the panther party I make this accurate prediction applicable to the future of yours truly I resolve to keep growing in wisdom cause until the day I rest in peace I will always be an unreachable me If you enjoyed this article, Join BlackInAmerica.com today for similar content and opportunities via email! |
