It's never too late or too early to plan for financing a college education. Below is a list of scholarships sent by a friend. He is very passionate about why blacks do NOT apply for scholarships and then the available money is returned to the sender.
Why do we allow scholarship funds to slip through our grasp?
Anyhu- here are the links and I pray this information is shared and utilized. I know when my kids went to college, I wish I had all this information, but I also remember how overwhelmed I was with the few applications I did file. How did I beat that overwhelming feeling? Here are some quick tips to help you through your overwhelming feelings?
1) Select two Scholarships at a time and begin completing all the requirements for just those two;
2) Make several copies of tax forms, household income data, etc. and keep them in a folder so when you complete a scholarship application, you have this information already handy;
3) Have your child write an essay about why they wish to attend a certain school or earn a certain degree and have this essay proofed for grammar, punctuation, etc. and then make several copies of it also and file in a folder;
4) Keep this essay handy in a folder so you can use it as needed. You should be able to make few changes to make this essay applicable to any scholarship request. For example, a basic essay about being the first-generation college student and what focus area of study can be used for a degree in political science, business, science, etc. You should also obtain at least three references and try to have a reference be from a Pastor or former teacher and then a friend or family member in a good position. Make copies of these as well and keep in a folder for future uses;
5) Make simultaneous applications as much as possible rather than sending off one or two and waiting for a response before applying for additional funds. The more applications you send, the more likely you will receive funds to use for college;
6) Pay attention to deadlines. If you missed it, look into the following year and get moving.;
7) Keep a record of all scholarships applied for and contact information so you can do follow-ups YOURSELF (don't rely on Financial Aide offices);
8) Always ask if a particular Scholarship grantor knows of any other scholarships your child may be eligible to apply for. {Especially if you are denied. You will be surprised about how referrals are made between scholarship grantors};
9) Set aside one day a week for working on scholarships. On this particular day, you can check on the status or complete a new application for a new resource; and
10) Always check with your state's department of higher education for any grants or scholarships you may be able to apply for.

AFRICAN AMERICAN STUDENTS ARE NOT APPLYING FOR SCHOLARSHIPS:
Even if you do not have a college-aged child at home, please share this with someone who does, and to anyone and everyone that comes to mind. Though there are a number of companies and organizations that have donated money for scholarships to African Americans, a great deal of the money is being returned because of a lack of interest or awareness.
Take the initiative to get your children involved. Money shouldn't be returned to donating companies because we fail to apply for it.
Please pass this information on to family members, nieces, nephews, friends with children etc. We must get the word out that money is available. If you are a college student or getting ready to become one, you probably already know how useful additional money can be.
