While doing a small sheltered research of acne I learned very much. In terms of what acne really is and what studies have been conducted on the causes and cures. I found first the cures are multiplicitiy! From creams to lotions and all kinds of potions. Pardon the rhymes poets and poetessess tend to do that from time to time. In finding the causes most of my references indicated that diet may be the major cause of acne outbreaks. Acne is a condition or disease which is caused when pours of the skin become plugged with blackhead, or whiteheads usually with persons with oily skin. Areas effected are face, neck, shoulders and back. Although acne is not a life-threating condition the psycological effects can been upsetting to many sufferers.
Types of acne: There are at least seven or more types of acne by name.
In brief--
Lesion: A physical change in body tissue caused by a disease or injury e.g. skin cancer, psoraitic plaque, knife cut or internal caused by lung cancer]
Comedo: When folicles plugged with sebum, dead cells from inside the sebaceous follice, tiny hairs causes bacteria, and comely called a whitehead. Slighty inflamed "bump" in the skin.
Papule: A small solid lesion elevated upon the suface of the skin usually in a group. Papule has a sandpaper feel. Covers skin in 5 millimeters or less.
Pustule: Dome shaped fragile lesions usually contains pulse and typically a mixture of white blood cells and dead skin. Acne pustules have hair in the center and heal without scaring in most cases.
Macule: A temporary red spot left by an ace lesion. They are usually flat red or pink in color. When grouped in large areas they can contribute to an inflamed area.
Nodule: Nodule come in dome-shaped, with inflammation extended deeper into layers of the skin. They can be very painful and is one of most severe forms of acne.
Cyst: A sac like lesion containing semi-liquid of white blood cells, dead cells and bacteria. Cysts are painful and can leave scarring. This is another severe form of acne and the most resistant to treatment. Even following healing scars remain visble.
Acne effect 100% of all groups of people. Ages are between 12-17. Most treatments are over the counter products unless in severe cases then a demotologist is recommended. Age groups from as young as 10 can develop acne. Social background or race has little impact on who gets acne. Blacks are noted to have about the same number of acne sufferers as any other races. One study I found, stated that in Zambia black were less lackly to developing acne like conditions.
Social Impact:
Psychosocial effects of acne suffers have a significant impact on a person outlook on life. Many who have the condition feel withdrawl, decreased self-esteem, less self-confidence, poor body image, embrassment, depression, anger preoccupation, frustration and even have a higher rate of unemployment. Studies indicate that these negative effects are crippling and may cause sufferers to be less likely in be socially active in jobs or schools.
There is much I've learned about the skin we live in. More is to learn. As knowledge gives us power to help, aid, become more senisble and respectable to others we see everyday. Your comments are welcomed if you're interested to share about acne. Thank you for dropping in for a read.
Bye now...
