In 1980 five women in Santa Rosa, CA started The National Women's History Project which led a colitation to urge the recognition of nationally bringing women contributions to it's forefront. This established the month of March as Women's History Month.
By 1981 the first Congressional Resolution declaring National Women's Week was co-sponsored by Senator Orrin, Representative of Utah and Representative Barbara Mikulski of Maryland. The National Women Project was successful with bipartisan supporters in the House and Senate naming March Women's History Month.
