HOW WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH BEGIN (322 hits)

Recogning Great a Woman!
[Pictured Maya Angelou, Author/Poetess/Actress and Humanitarian]

Most of you may be well aware that March is the month to recognize the accomplishments and achievements of women. You may never knew before now, that just such a month was designated to women and it may seem as brand new to you. The Education Task Force in Sonoma, CA was the first organization within the United States to promote the idea of Women History. This organization started with it successful campaign of "Women's History Week" in 1978 beginning with the week of March 8th. Soon area schools took up promoting the participation with programs onbserving this event.

One year later in 1979 the Women's History Institute adopted the idea and introduced it as as national recognition of a week long observance. In 1980 five women in Santa Rosa, CA started The National Women's History Project which led a colitation to urge the recognition of nationally bringing women contributions to it's forefront. This established the month of March as Women's History Month.

By 1981 the first Congressional Resolution declaring National Women's Week was co-sponsored by Senator Orrin, Representative of Utah and Representative Barbara Mikulski of Maryland. The National Women Project was successful with bipartisan supporters in the House and Senate naming March Women's History Month. Now, it's becoming one of the most visable recognition given to women today. Many more women are becoming aware their history each March of each year and it's continuing growth is catching on and spreading!

Irma, as a poetess I admire Maya's staying power. She's always displays such a wholeness of woman. One day, I may meet her? [Well, it's just a thought] Even if I never do, I admire her work and accomplishments. North Carolina! No, I didn't know! [Triple smiles, Irma Girl!]

MIISRAEL, thanks for this inspiring and informational blog...

Maya Angelouis full of suprises in how many different hats she wears. example

Ms Angelou use to appear regularly on the Food Network as she is an expert on Black cultural foods history...this was a suprise to me when I saw her years ago as one of the Food network's food and drink consultants. I had only until then known her for her poems. (smile)

Oh, and because "I" know you are dying to know this my sister, she is also from the state of North Carolina. lol
