As a normal day goes by, I often run into some great conversations. In doing so I met a woman who has the gift of making some extraodinary dress pins that look like marvelous dolls. She explained to me how she got started with the idea, and her perception of it being her own type of art.
Later the conversing turned into how many of our children are missing out on the arts. Like ballet, painting, violin.. music lessons and poetry. Even taking trips to view the arts I found it was stunning how many of our black children don't go or have ever seen the inside of a museum. And..we are less likely to have our children visit the library to open up books and read.
When I grew up things were differently, I never explored things like that until I was grown and away from home. My parents, probably never did either. Today, I'm just wondering. Why are so many of our young children not getting to see what the fulfillments are often shown in just being or looking at things in the world of art? What connection if there is one have we lost? Can't we contribute the ideas in places we see our children?
The woman was associated with the Memphis Art Alliance and she says it's what inspired her. She said she is excited to show her creativity. I agreed and ordered one of her dress pins. "I specifically told her to make mine like a bride." [Smiles]
