Kolontar, Hungary
October 2010
Hungary is facing one it's worst disasters known. Monday, October 04, 2010 a red sludge reservoir at a metal works alumina factory burst releasing a red and toxic mud near the ville of Kolontar, Hungary. This disaster has so far-- caused at least four deaths and last noted that three persons were missing. More than 150 people were treated for burns and many remain in serious condition. However, the ground of red sludge is so great that it has feared to have found it's way to safe drinking waters. Since it's toxic travel the red sludge has turned waters into a blood like color. Clean up crews are fiercely working at trying to control it's spread with very little control.
Not only has the red mud affected humans, but plant and wildlife. The death of deer, fish and other animal life has become victim of this all too great of an accident. Scientists have found mercury has a long lasting effect in water and land and much of the whole site of the countryside is red. Still maintaining the water is drinkable, many Hungarians tend to disagree. Latest news indicate the Danube river is now covered with reminders of the spill. Hungarians are perplexed and devasted because of this horrific happening has forced many of them to live elsewhere as they view their own beautiful village of Kolontar may turn into a desolate red land and ghost town. The spill is estimated at 1 million tons.
