Former President Bill Clinton made a surprise appearance in the White House briefing room Friday afternoon to express his support for the tax cut compromise worked out between President Obama and Congressional Republicans. Mr. Obama stood next to Mr. Clinton while the latter made a statement of support for the $858 billion bill, which is facing strong opposition from House Democrats who object to a two-year extension of tax cuts for the highest earners and the levels at which the estate tax would be set. The president, who said the two men had come from a "terrific meeting," left the room about ten minutes after Mr. Clinton began taking questions from reporters. Mr. Clinton said that "the agreement taken as a whole is, I believe, the best bipartisan agreement we can reach." He said Democrats should act now because "I don't believe they can get a better deal by waiting." He argued that Republicans will have less incentive to accept Democratic demands to extend unemployment insurance benefits and tax breaks for middle- and lower-income Americans once the new Congress starts. "The numbers will only get worse in January in terms of negotiating," he said. "And the president -- look, if we had 5 percent growth and unemployment was dropping like a rock, maybe you could have the so-called Mexican stand-off and you could say, it will be you not me the voters will hold responsible for raising taxes on middle class people if they all go down next year." He added, however, that America's shaky economic footing means that's not a risk the president should take. "The United States has suffered a severe financial collapse," he said. "These things take longer to get over than normal recessions. We must first make sure we keep getting over it. We don't want to slip back down as Japan did." The former president also referred to the bill as a "stimulus" before adding, "Well, I guess we're not supposed to use that word." His appearance came on the same day that Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders spent hours on the Senate floor railing against the bill, which he criticized as a giveaway for "millionaires and billionaires who don't need it." Mr. Clinton said he wasn't sure "if I could influence anybody," adding, "All I can tell you is what I think." He said it would be an "enormous relief" to the American people if the two parties could show they could compromise and agree to pass a bill. "This holds the promise that after the fights are over we'll be able to find principle compromises" on a range of issues, he said. He told reporters that both sides had given up something to get to the agreement, noting that members of both parties felt their side had given up too much. "So, I think that's healthy, too," he said. "Because everybody's got to give a little. Yes, I think the one thing that has always happens when you have divided government is that people no longer see principle compromise as weakness. This system was set up to promote principle compromise." Asked what advice he had given Mr. Obama in their meeting, Mr. Clinton said his rule is not to discuss his advice to the president publicly. He said Mr. Obama could make public their discussions if he wanted to do so. The former president also urged the Senate to ratify the START nuclear treaty with Russia before the lame duck session ends, arguing that "the cooperation that we will get from the Russians and the signal that will be sent to the world on nonproliferation, when all these other things are going on which threaten to increase nuclear proliferation is very important." At one point, a reporter said to the former president, "I get the feeling that you're happier to be here commenting and giving advice than governing." "Oh, I had quite a good time governing," Mr. Clinton responded. "I am happier when the bullets are less likely to hit me. I'm happy to be here because I -- I think the president made a good decision and because I want my country to do well and after the '94 election, I said the American people in their wisdom had put us in the same boat. We're going to row or sink and i want us to row."

I feel you on that Sista Jen. Go President Obama and former president Clinton. This also makes him look good, maybe not on the other side, but I think it says a lot about a person, when they reach out for help to help others.

Looks like the Clinton-Obama alliance is one of the strongest partnerships in politics. President Obama is already taking pages out of Clinton's playbook--How to deal with massive losses for your party in the midterm elections. Let's hope he can be as successful!

The most important factor in economic recovery is psychology. I would reverse the terms and say we now have a united government. Before we were divided because a large segment of the population perceived they were not being represented. It's all about equal representation. So now we are united not divided and will have the sense that we are working together toward the common goal of restoring our prosperity. And President Obama will get his second term. I myself will vote for him now, whereas a 11/2 I would not have.

Amen Brotha Richard, He can learn a lot from the greatest President (my feelings) that ever lived! Brotha Clark you said a mouthful, but unfortunately President Obama took leave, when he should have stood there and listened to a smooth politician speak to his people on the side of common sense. I just hoped they talked in private and President Obama reviews his notes and like you said absorb and study. President Obama is just not that kind of man or maybe he’s not seasoned enough to call the other sides bluff, but he’s growing into his. I guess living and learning is the greatest experience. Brotha Steve, you’re right, he could turn this into an advantage. I’m glad President Clinton is whispering in his ear, because he didn’t have to and while president Obama is a strategist, he’s sitting in a disconnected bubble up in the white house and needs people like Bill Clinton with his ear to the streets to be his sounding board. Yes President Obama, “We’ve Got Your Back”

Clark, I have full confidence that President Obama's reelection has been assured by the Republican gains in the midterms. If the backlash had not occurred in 2010, it would have been in 2012. Better now than then. The balance (if you prefer) means neither side gets everything, of course, but the upside is the reduction of discontent, because neither side will feel coerced by the other. The President has the power of veto, and Congress knows it.

I hear you Brotha Clark. Problem I'm seeing is President Obama is so intent on being bi-partisan that he's allowing his values to be compromised and that's not a good thing when it comes to re-election. Oprah's always singing, you gotta know when to hold, fold and when to walk away, well now is the time to hold. Wake up President Obama, Your public awaits and the will of the people are with you. Brotha Clark you said neither side gets everything. Pray tell me what is the Republicans giving up and what they have put on the table and are asking for means anything to them, or are these just delay tactics in this political game they're playing. If there was an upside the Dems would have voted on it and let it pass, but did not. They do feel coerced as you put it. I just hope they do come to an agreement and the president doesn't have to use the veto pen. That would mean that the people are sitting in limbo while the powers that be stop fighting and vote on something and how long do you think thats going to take.

To all: Let me quote Clark as a starting point, "go to the American people and tell them what the republicans are doing". The Republicans are not just the Republican representatives, but the Republican people that voted for them. The Democrats are not just the Democrat representatives but the Democrat people that voted for them. Therefor the People ARE the Republicans and Democrats. Second, let's call this time we are in what it really is, the Second Great Depression. Lots of people are hurting, and this includes myself and two of my sons. Three of us that are unemployed, and that receive no unemployment benefits. That doesn't mean we don't make some money from time to time, but we don't get a regular paycheck, nothing that would be reliable enough for a landlord let's say. Now about benefits. I was a software engineer for most of my career, but in 2004 I started my own masonry business. Looking back, I could say that was a mistake, but I don't call anything in my life a mistake. We make choices, and we live the consequences. Anyway, I became disabled from doing this kind of heavy work, so I applied for Social Security Disability. That was in Sept. 2008. I'm still waiting for an administrative hearing. So much for the Social Security payments I made for a period of 30 years, many of those later years at the maximum amount. But there are other benefits besides Social Security and unemployment. Commonly known as Welfare. So instead of getting what is rightfully mine, what I paid into, Social Security, I am a welfare case. And I can tell you it is'nt a very uplifting experience. However, it keeps me alive, literally. It pays all my medical bills, which are substantial. But this is only because I have applied for SS disability; the state needs to have that money paid back by the federal government, dependent on my disability application being approved. I also get food stamps and $215 a month cash benefit. Another benefit, when I enroll in a teacher certification program, will be a Teach Grant. This grant is up to $4000 a year, if one makes the commitment to teach in a low-income district, which is my plan. All this personal information is to say that it is wrong to assume that the Republican people voted for the Republican representatives because they are the so-called party of the wealthy The Number One Priority is JOBS. The American people differ on how this is to be achieved. They may be Republican or they may be Democrats, but everyone wants JOBS. Does anyone think I voted against my own interests when I voted Republican? I did not! First of all, it is not all about me. It's also about my children, grandchildren, and also all the other American people who don't want to be on welfare but want to WORK! And really I did not vote Republican, nor am I a Republican. I voted for what we are told is a Divided government, but which I call a Balanced government. I voted for a government that will bring a range of options to the table to do what is necessary to have an economy where I can find a job and not have to rely on a government handout!

Sista Irma is correct. We should all be supporting our president right now to get things done that need doing. Brotha Clark’s statement and breakdown of the agreement reiterates my feelings, and the reason why the Democrats rejected it. President Obama caved too soon all in the name of bi-partisanship and needs to take another look at himself. This is why I’m so glad former President Clinton stepped up to the plate. He could have let the president stew in his own juices and sit back and let his wife take the Presidency in 2012, but he chose to fight with our President and that’s a good thing. The people only see face value and see only snippets of information, but when you look deep into this agreement, you see what actually is on the table, and once again the poor benefit nothing and the rich get richer. Brotha Clarke, it seems the people do not hear for lack of understanding. Our people are a peculiar people, and want what they want when they want it not seeing the longstanding benefits. That’s what got us into this problem in the first place. Yes US! We are a spending nation and that’s a fact. Don’t you worry about those benefits. Just think of it like this, when you get them, you will get all that back pay for when they should have been paying you dating back to 2008. I filed disability claims for my sanitation workers when I was with NYC Dept. of Sanitation and it took years sometime for payouts, but eventually they got their monies, sometimes after they were back to work. Get good representation. I hope everything works out for you with your teaching destination. Actually Brotha the Republican people do vote for republicans because they are the party of wealthy and know it would benefit them. The republicans just voted against a one-time $250 payment to Social Security recipients to compensate for no cost-of-living adjustment for 2011. That’s just amazing to me, that they wouldn’t want to give them those benefits, when what they laid on the table is astronomical. I can’t wait to see how they vote on “The Dream Act”, which will create 2.3 billion over the next 10 years and slash the deficit by 1.4 billion.

Thank-you both, Clark and Anita, for your good wishes. Teaching is the most worthwhile thing I can do at this stage in my life. Everything happens for a reason, and anything worthwhile takes time, and I am nothing if not persistent. Back to the subject. There is a crucial element in all this that is too often overlooked. I would post this video but I can't embed it so I can only provide the link. Dec. 1 (Bloomberg) -- U.S. Representative Ron Paul, a Republican from Texas, talks about the Federal Reserve's response to the financial crisis and the bank's that borrowed from the Fed's Term Auction Facility. Paul speaks with Pimm Fox on Bloomberg Television's "Taking Stock." http://www.bloomberg.com/video/64942500/ And the latest news is "Ron Paul, Author of ‘End the Fed,’ to Lead Fed Panel" http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2010-12-09/r...

Brotha Clarke, since you got the knowledge, please answer this for me. What would it take for the president or whoever to change the way votes are counted. Instead of having to obtain 60 votes, why not just the majority rules? I can’t believe the House got the vote through and the Senate can’t since they are still in the majority right now. What we need to do is like that Hispanic group (who charged Kay Hutchison’s as being anti Hispanic), and put out a statement saying if she votes against the DREAM ACTS bill, they were going after her for re-election. If more people did like those tea party people did, some of this stuff could be stopped. Instead we looked dumb founded when they were causing havoc all over the country. We can’t complain about anything, because we let it happen. We had the majority and gave it away.

Our president is in a situation taht our country has no guide lines to follow at all...so "I" believe taht he is doing everything by ear and using his back ground as a street fighter with all visions of a better day for main street and his expretes as a constitutional attorney and also a life of abuse by those with not one worry or regards for teh feelings / bad state of their fellow man in a do unto others as you would have them do unto you and not for the biggest buck and greatest power. "I" have full faith in our president and will back his ever move as I doubt if he ever does anything for short term pleasure to only end up with long term pain.... "I HAVE YOUR BACK MR.
