FARRAKHAN SAYS A MUSIC ALBUM IS IN THE WORKS (3544 hits)

CHICAGO-- Nation of Islam Minister Louis Farrakhan is again embracing his musical roots.

The 77-year-old leader best known for his controversial speeches says he's working on an album that may include tracks or portions of work by the late Motown singer Teena Marie.

Farrakhan spoke Thursday on Chicago radio station WVON-AM.

Bron Louis Eugene Walcott on May 11, 1933 in Boston, Farrakhan learned to sing and play the violin as a boy. A Nation of Islam biography says as a young teen he earned appearances with the Boston College Orchestra and Boston Civic Symphony.

Farrakhan went on to become a popular performer in the 1950s known as "The Charmer" and worked as a vocalist, singer, dancer and violinist. He stopped performing after joining the Nation of Islam.

The Nation of Islam is based in Chicago.

I remember a time when I was about 12 years old and me and my parents were watching a video of the Minister that was made in 1981...it was made the same year I was born, and at the end of the video the Minister is singing a cover of "Stand By Me"...I thought it was Ben E. King himself singing until my father turned towards me and told me that it was the minister singing...I could barely tell the difference!
