In the wake of the overwhelming damage and estimated 10,000 deaths caused by Friday’s 9.0-magnitude earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan, Harris-Stowe State University announced a campus-wide initiative to collect money to support the humanitarian relief efforts of the American Red Cross in Japan. This effort, which began today, is similar to past fundraising campaigns that provided relief and assistance to those affected by the Haitian earthquake and Hurricane Katrina.
“The devastation and destruction caused by the recent earthquake and tsunami is simply incomprehensible,” said Dr. Henry Givens, Jr., president of Harris-Stowe State University. “I am extremely proud of our students and the entire HSSU community for their efforts to assist those in need, halfway across the world. The money collected through their campaign will allow the American Red Cross to provide essential supplies and assistance to our global neighbors in Japan. As an institution, our goal at Harris-Stowe is always to encourage our students to be responsible global citizens, by reaching out to assist those in need. We encourage other universities in the St. Louis area, who haven’t already done so, to also support the Japan relief efforts.”
The Harris-Stowe administration is encouraging the HSSU Board of Regents, faculty, staff, students and alumni to give at whatever level they see fit. In support of the University’s donation drive, Harris-Stowe’s Student Government Association and the Harris-Stowe chapter of Student United Way will be collecting donations at booths weekdays, March 17-25, and April 4-8, outside the Hornet Dining Hall from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. and at the Anheuser-Busch School of Business, 5-7 p.m.
Donations should be made payable to the American Red Cross – St. Louis Chapter, and should note the “Japan earthquake relief effort” in the memo line. Outside of the student-run donation booth times, donations may be given to the President’s Office, room 108 of the Dr. Henry Givens, Jr. Administration Building.
