EXTENDING EXPRESSIONS IN THE YEARS OF NATIONAL POETRY MONTH (2935 hits)


APRIL 2011

National Poetry Month began it's inspiring movement 15 years ago following the much success of February's Black History Month and Women's History Month in March. In 1995 the Academy of American Poets convened a group of publishers, librarian, booksellers, literary organizations and teachers and poets along with many other groups to elevate another great month to celebrate poetry! Combining the month to be designated to poetry and the love and celebration of the gift of rhyme, reason and imagination of words in verse. The very first month of the celebrating national poetry was held in 1996.

The Academy of American Poets distributed 100,00 free books of poetry in 1998 from New York to California and at that time on April 22, 1998 President Clinton and the First Lady hosted a gala at the White House with featured then Poets Laureate Robert Pinsky, Robert Hass, and Rita Dove. Later in 2001 poets were feature of the American postage stamps. Langston Hughes was one selected as receiving the most votes. The stamp was available for sale in January 2002.

The special purpose of this month is to write a poem a day everyday in April. Publishers sometime are overwhelmed with the volumes of books that become available during the month long celebration. Although the month is a National Celebration, the account of it's notability has spread to International proportions. Writers and poets express all over the world in remembering the month of the spoken word, and the contagious writings of poems. Amatuer or professional poets give out their expressions of poems.

The celebration of National Poetry Month has grown within it's 15 year of writings and there seem to endless days of poetry writers to come.

The WORD POWER is released in National Poetry Month for many poets and poetess alike.
Writing verse short and long...Let the pens begin writing!

BEAUTY TIPS

For attractive lips, speak words of kindness.
For lovely eyes, seek out the good in people.
For a slim figure, share your food with the hungry.

For beautiful hair, let a child run his or her fingers
through it once a day.
For poise, walk with the knowledge
that you will never walk alone.

People, even more than things, have to be restored,
renewed, revived, reclaimed, and redeemed;
Never throw out anybody.
Remember, If you ever need a helping hand,
you'll find one at the end of your arm.

As you grow older, you will discover
that you have two hands, one for helping yourself,
the other for helping others.

The beauty of a woman is not
in the clothes she wears,
The figure that she carries,
or the way she combs her hair.

The beauty of a woman must
be seen from in her eyes,
Because that is the doorway to her heart,
the place where love resides.

The beauty of a woman is not in a facial mole,
But true beauty in a woman is reflected in her soul.
It is the caring that she lovingly gives,
the passion that she shows.

And the beauty of a woman,
with passing years, only grows!

THE EXILED RETURNS
DANTE PRAYERS

[Written for Dante delgi Alighieri
Italian poet of the Middle Ages]
There are many paintings of Dante in the 15th century.
The artists gave visionaries of his most diversified work of “Comedy”
There is the poplar locality called Dante’s peak in Death Valley, CA

Trot thee O’ Poet..
to the gate of the land
of promises..

Let thy chains of exile drop
and the pellets of a free land..
make a continuum
of endless grandfather’s
on the walls give unto this chime!

Cast thy soul to the sea..
Remember me…
Remember me..

Tis the melody of the soloist.
A song in dawn of thee poet…

For here the exiled returns
to this tide…
where there a bride..
perched so on mountains resides.

For in thy Comedy..
laughed thy words..
and from the oceans
returned thy frock.

Dante O’ Thy Dearest
Thy spirit hath sent
forget-me- nots!

Prayer of thy loftiness
long awaited the in sea..
Hast been answered unto thee.
Remember me…remember me..

"GIVE ME MY RESPECT"

Respect, Respect me
Respect, respect me, I say
In every single way
Respect me day by day

Don’t put me down
When we are out and about with people around
Playing me like a fool
Portraying me as one who never went to school

Respect me sweet heart
Till life sets us apart

Respect my needs
Listen and take heed

Respect to me is what means love
And not those commonly spoken words,
‘I love you’

To respect me is to publicly and privately honour me
To respect me is to listen attentively while I speak
To respect me is to bread and butter my desire to be free
To respect me is to stand by me when I am weak

Look up Look up to me
I may not be perfect
Nor a genius of an intellect
Respect, respect me & our love will stand erect

MY MOTHER'S BIRTHDAY...

My mother's birthday ...
lovely and green

I visited her with candles to blow out..
but without a cake.

I sat with her a few moments thinking
of her marvelous life and her young age.

I wanted to light them and sing to her of her
birthday affair.
I wanted to hold her in hugs and to comb her soft hair.

I only just sat there ....
with candles and I said
"Mother it's your birthday!

I looked tenderly upon her headstone..
and placed the candles unlit
on her grave.
...tenderly.

Brace yourself child
It's a moment of lies
Don't sell yourself cheap
It brings tears to your eyes

You let others tell you
What is best for you
And let go of dreams
For dreams of them too

You look in the mirror
At a once pretty face
And say that the beauty
Has left you in gray

Listen to me friend
That beauty is there
If you look past the anger
And tears of despair

Those envious others
Have always been lying
So put on a smile
And stop all the crying

You have what you need
Don't give up on life
Of course there are enemies
On the long road of strife

But you are so beautiful
And bold and a friend
There's no way you can give up
And let your life end

Of course we will cry
And suffer from sorrow
But never ever wish
That there be no tomorrow

If I'm the only one
Who listen to your dreams

A POEM I CHOSE FOR TODAY:

Written for Glenn

A GLEN'S SPIRIT

Wildflowers spring forth in a glen's spirit,
bursting in prayers and spiritual praises.
The birds sing hymns with
"It is you that I love."

Bees are humming a nature's song for they
know the Creator cares for them.
Daffodils blow in soft winds and wrap around me.
I smell the sweetness in the glen and the melancholy
of it's harmony.

He reads of the Lord's word and God is in his soul.
He lives in the light and life which has made him free.
I have seen of a glen's spirit...and heard him
speaking to me..

TAPESTRY

What many threads run through
connecting the cloth of frame.
For
a wall.
One thread
missing would be an empty lace..
so it whisped in it's
proper place.

Like a word in a song
if left out..then
the lyric would be silent
when it would be sung.

Completed to hang
it's the beauty to the
call
Decorating to pleasurable
eyes the many threads
is like the finish to words
complied.

A TEMPORARY THANG

I am happy
this emptiness right here
this emptiness right now
is a temporary thang.

Happy people cry too
even if their tears are confused, missed and taken for laughter
Happy people scream too
even though their pain is mistaken for con and fused with fervor

I am a happy person
and this emptiness is a temporary thang

this Emptiness
where my Worth once stood
Worth I so carelessly gave away
Worth that with an equal carelessness was wasted away,
until my hallowed became hollow...

Stand not at this grave and weep for me
Neither grieve for me Nor hold wake with me
instead
give me your noise
lend me your laughter
create chaotic celebration so that I can cry

Soak me in the sun of your warm smiles,
transmute this sea of tears into fertile spring rains rich with the beauty of our combined joy.
Lend me the rhythm of your stamping feet
turn bitter grapes of sorrow into sweet wines of sacred wisdom, a precious ambrosia garnered from life’s painful lessons
Pour it over this rotted earth
let me use your bright colors as inspiration to re-landscape my barren greedy glorious garden

Grieve not for me
nor hold wake with me

give me noise
lend me laughter
create chaotic celebration so that I can
cleanse
create
and cry

for I am a happy person
and this
