Harris-Stowe President to be Honored at MOKAN 36th Anniversary Awards Dinner (801 hits)

Harris-Stowe State University President Dr. Henry Givens Jr. will be honored with the MOKAN Lifetime Achievement Award on Friday, July 29, 2011, during the company’s 36th anniversary awards dinner.

MOKAN, a St. Louis construction contractors assistance center, has themed the event, “Achieving Excellence Through Education for Generations.” Dr. Givens, who announced his retirement from Harris-Stowe in May after 32 years of service to higher education, will be recognized for his long-standing career in leading Harris-Stowe, including expanding its degree offering and campus facilities over the course of his successful tenure. MOKAN Executive Director Yaphett El-Amin and Board of Directors Chairman Thomas Nellums will present the award to President Givens alongside keynote speaker Eric Rhone, CEO of Visions Management Group.

“Just as Harris-Stowe, MOKAN has been committed to this community for many years while playing a key role in the fight for equal rights and minority inclusion,” said Dr. Henry Givens Jr. “It is a privilege for me to accept this award on behalf of my work for Harris-Stowe State University, which has indeed been a life-long labor of love for me. There has been more than $62 million spent on campus expansion at Harris-Stowe in the past 12 years, which has included a significant investment in minority-owned firms, and we are proud of that.”

Dr. Givens, will be honored along with Vince Bennett of McCormack-Baron Salazar (MOKAN Private Sector of the Year) and Cheryl Lovell, executive director of the St. Louis Housing Authority (MOKAN Public Sector of the Year), and will attend the dinner and awards ceremony at the Hilton St. Louis Airport Hotel.

Harris-Stowe State University, located in midtown St. Louis, is a four-year institution that offers 14 degree programs in the areas of Accounting, Business Administration, Biology, Criminal Justice, Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, Health Care Management, Hospitality and Tourism Management, Information Sciences and Computer Technology, Mathematics, Middle School Education, Professional Interdisciplinary Studies, Secondary Education and Urban Education. Ranked by U.S. News as one of America’s Best Colleges in the Midwest, the University, which has been in existence for more than 150 years, offers the most affordable bachelor’s degree in the metropolitan area.
