Myrlie Evers To Keynote The 2011 Founder’s Day Convocation At Alcorn (898 hits)

Alcorn will honor outstanding students, alumni, faculty and staff at its 2011 Founder’s Day Convocation in the historic Oakland Memorial Chapel at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 27.

Myrlie Evers, a champion for civil rights and the wife of civil rights martyr Medgar Wiley Evers '52, will deliver the convocation address. At 10:00 a.m. Evers will also participate in the official Ribbon Cutting and Dedication Ceremony of the new Medgar Wiley Evers Heritage Village, a state-of-the-art student housing complex, that includes four residence halls and an amenities building that opened to students in 2010. The complex was named by students in honor of Evers’ courage, leadership and service.

Alcorn President M. Christopher Brown II will preside over the convocation, which celebrates the founding of the 140-year old University. “As Alcorn celebrates its past, we must also recognize our present and future and the major contributions of our students, alumni and employees,” says President Brown. “Celebrating Founder’s Day provides an opportunity for Alcorn to reflect on its history and the sacrifices all Alcornites have made to insure we {Alcorn} keep moving forward and contribute to a productive society.”

Evers attended Alcorn A&M College from 1949 to 1952 when she married Medgar Evers. She has fought her entire life for racial and gender equality in America. After the 1963 murder of her first husband, she earned a degree in sociology from Pomona College in 1968. Evers became the first African-American woman appointed as commissioner for the Los Angeles Board of Public Works and the first woman to chair the NAACP.

The event is free and open to the public. For more information, call (601) 877-6131 or visit www.alcorn.edu.
