23RD DAY
Mumbai, India
The Hindu names "Nakusa" and "Nakushi" which means unwanted will be no longer be ones called by 200 Indian girls. The girls numbering about 285 have protested their names because of the discrimination surrounded by male gender being most popluar among births. The plight of girls in India came to a focus after this year's census showed the nation's s*x ratio had dropped over the past decade from 927 girls for every 1,000 boys under the age of 6 to 914. The population favors males because it more expensive to marry off girls than boys. Since the name Nakusa denotes unwanted, the girls were given new names in the fight against gender discrimination. Many of the girls chose names that were more promising like the name "Ashmita" which means "very tough". Activists said that the name "unwanted" is widely used by many Indian girls, and has possible given less liberation in the fight for women equality. The girls were elated to receive their certificates baring their new names.
"Women have it Ashmita!"
