2011 has been reported as the worst illegal ivory trade with at least 50 elephants being slaughted a month. This according from a report provided from the wildlife trade monitoring network --TRAFFIC. Often on the large scale illegal dealings are growing and endangering the species. A recent reported stated that large siezures of elephant tusks represents at least 2,500 dead animals and may due to organized crime. In addition to the elephant, the seizures also contain ivory for that of rhinos. Most cases involved cases from Africa to Asia where wealth is desired of ivory from elephants and the rhino which is used for it's traditional medical usages.
The ivory trades have been it's worst in 23 years according to a TRAFFIC expertise who also reported on December 21, 2011 a seized shipment costing over 3 million dollars was shipped to Cambodia. With latest shipments being huge now the illegal traders are going also by sea instead of air, with false shipments to mislead investigators and traffic police. With 2011 increasing losses of the elephants and rhinos wildlife trade montoring network will continually be in a battle to maintain it's alertness in order to combat such increased threat and unnecessary deaths of elephants and rhinos.
