Officer suspended for saying 'Act like a Thug Die like one!' in Martin case (1211 hits)

A 13-year veteran of the New Orleans Police Department has been suspended without pay for his comment “Act like a Thug Die like one!” in response to a story about slain Florida teen Trayvon Martin.
Jason Giroir is under investigation by the New Orleans Public Integrity Bureau after a remark was posted on WWLTV.com’s website in response to an article about a rally supporting Martin. The slaying of the 17-year-old, who was shot by a neighborhood watch captain, has drawn nationwide attention.
Giroir has admitted to posting the comment last week. "His statement is, 'Yes, I did it’," Giroir’s lawyer, Eric Hessler, told The Times-Picayune. "He certainly didn't mean it as a racial comment, as an offensive comment, although it came out that way. He acknowledges he should have chosen better words.
Attempts by msnbc.com to reach Hessler for comment were unsuccessful Tuesday. A woman answering telephone calls at his office said Hessler was in court and would return calls later in the day.
New Orleans Superintendent Ronal Serpas announced Giroir’s suspension on Monday.
"To say that I’m angry is an understatement. I’m furious," said Serpas in a statement on Monday. "Let me be clear, the hard working men and women of the NOPD do not condone such statements. Giroir by those statements has embarrassed this department with insensitive, harmful and offensive comments. The New Orleans Police Department specifically condemns these comments, and comments like this will not be tolerated in the New Orleans Police Department."
New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu also issued a statement supporting Serpas' action against Giroir, adding, "The people of New Orleans and my administration will not tolerate this reckless and offensive behavior. I condemn his statements in the strongest of terms."
The New Orleans police force created a policy regarding Internet posts a few years ago, which states: “Employees shall not post any material on the Internet -- including but not limited to photos, videos, word documents etc. -- that violates any local, state or federal law and/or embarrasses, humiliates, discredits, or harms the operation and reputation of the police department or any of its members,” WWLTV.com reported.
The probe comes less than a month after Giroir was involved in a deadly shootout on March 1 that is still under investigation.
Giroir made a traffic stop that escalated to a gunfight that left one man dead and two officers injured. Giroir did not fire any shots and was unharmed, but a bullet hit the Taser he was carrying during the shootout.

Mom this officer is no way connected to the Hurricane Katrina bridge shooting...actually this officer is the same officer who was involved in the deadly shooting of Justin Sipp during a traffic stop near the Burger King restaurant on March 1 (check out my last POLICE BRUTALITY WATCH blog). Justin was an employee of that Burger King restaurant.

On the day of the shooting Justin's brother Earl was driving him to work when he was stopped by Officer Grior for violating traffic. Earl denied that he had violated any traffic signals but the officer insisted that Earl was. Earl was then handcuffed to the steering wheel when gunfire broke out. Justin died on the scene, and Earl sustained minor injuries.

POLICE BRUTALITY WATCH: BROTHER OF MAN SHOT BY POLICE SPEAKS OUT (216 hits)

NEW ORLEANS -- While the investigation continues into Thursday's deadly shooting, a Mid-City family is mourning the loss of Justin Sipp, who was shot and killed by police.

"One of them was in college, both working. On their way to work. This is real bizarre, you know," said Larry Champ about his two brothers early morning commute.

About 100 yards from where Justin Sipp was being driven to work, a teddy bear and flowers now sit. The 20-year-old worked at the Burger King on City Park Avenue. On Thursday morning, his brother Earl was driving him to work when their commute turned violent.

Shortly after listening to NOPD Superintendent Ronal Serpas speak at a news conference broadcast on the radio, Champ spoke to Eyewitness News about the deadly shooting.

"Lets go into the investigation before we start throwing these things around: 'They shot the police and this and that.' Lets find out what the police did," said Champ.

NOPD says Justin Sipp began shooting at officers after a traffic stop, and that police returned fire, killing the 20-year-old.

"That's not what I heard they're not telling the total truth. Mayor Landrieu and Ronal Serpas and all of these people to get on the news and act like it was such a heroic act by these police. It's mind boggling to me," added Champ.

Injured in the cross fire was Earl Sipp, Jr., who was escorted by family and friends to a relative's house after being discharged from surgery at University Hospital. His attorney Glenn Woods said that the 23-year-old was handcuffed when gunfire broke out near the intersection of North Bernadotte and Toulouse Streets in Mid-City.

"The only thing I can tell you right now is Mr. Sipp is not being charged with anything. In fact at the time of the shooting, he was in handcuffs," said Woods.

Champ said the family wants a thorough police investigation to determine what exactly happened in the early morning hours.

For now, one grieving family says it's being left with more questions than answers.

"They were on their way to work with their uniforms on. What made them feel endangered with two guys with uniforms going to work?" said Champ.
