HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -Alabama A&M's president is trying to distance himself and the University from next month's appearance by Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan.
Dr. Andrew Hugine, Jr. said in a news release that his administration did not extend an invitation to Farrakhan and that the University was in no way sponsoring or funding the April 10th event in any way.
"Our University community and our local community are comprised of individuals of a wide variety of faiths, beliefs and personal convictions," said Hugine. "As a life-long educator, I have always encouraged students to embrace and pursue their fundamental beliefs and convictions with respect for the expressions of faith or opinion by others. In my experience, such encouragement has often resulted in meaningful and dignified dialogue. However, there are occasions when there exists an inevitable clash of ideals, opinions and beliefs and, in such instances, we believe we must be guided by the common principle which we all hold dear - the freedom of expression."
Farrakhan is scheduled to speak at the University's Elmore Building on the night of April 10th.
The 78-year-old Farrakhan has been the longtime leader of the Nation of Islam and his time in that role has drawn criticism for divisive and antisemitc remarks he's made in public speeches.
Hugine's news release says the views which may be expressed during the April event do not reflect or embody the views of Alabama A&M University.
"Like the upcoming opportunity afforded these student organizations, we have extended and will continue to extend an open invitation to those within our community to share their expressions of faith and belief with our University community." said Hugine.
