A Positive Image of Marriage and Family
Think of how long you’ve been with your significant other. Think of the top 5 things they have said to make you smile or blush. I’m sure some of those statements have been things like “you’re beautiful” or “thank you so much for doing that for me”. There’s one statement that shoots to the top of my list: “I’m proud of you.”
In the past week, my husband has told me he’s proud of me at least 5 times. After 15 months of being unemployed, I finally got a job and started work last week. For those of you who have been following our story, unemployment and lack of income has caused my husband and I to move back in with our families separately, and it’s certainly taken a toll on our relationship. However, this employment opportunity has been the ray of hope we’ve both been waiting for.
Obviously, I was happy to get anything after not having a job for over year. It’s a bonus that it’s full time hours, great pay, and something I love to do. When I told my husband, I just expected him to be happy that we were one income away from possibly being back under the same roof again. My job functions don’t necessarily interest him so I would have been fine with a congratulations. Then he told me he was proud of me.
My husband texted me while I was at work: “I’m so proud of you boo. And I told you that you could do anything and get any job as long as you stay focused and kept the faith.”
I guess I always associated making people proud to my parents, grandparents, and extended family. Don’t get me wrong, my husband has certainly made me proud as well. I was proud of him for graduating high school and making such a moving speech. I was proud of him for being ready for marriage (just keeping it real). I was proud of him for performing his music in front of a live crowd. I don’t know why I never considered him being proud of me. When I read the message I almost cried, but I had to get back to work.
People get really comfortable with their spouse as time goes on. Lots of couples joke that they don’t have to impress their spouse any longer because they’re married. Having my husband tell me he was proud of me made me want to work even harder. It’s not about impressing him exactly, but who wouldn’t want their husband or wife to be proud of them? I know Drake and Nicki Minaj may have wore out the phrase “I’m so proud of you” but coming from the love of my life, it was the best compliment I’ve ever gotten.
