HOLLIS, N.Y. (WPIX)— Queens residents will now get to "Walk This Way" on Run DMC JMJ Way.
A New York City street corner will be renamed after trail blazing rap trio Run DMC and Jam Master Jay, officials announced Tuesday.
The corner of 205th Street and Hollis Avenue will be rechristened "Run-DMC JMJ Way" to honor the hip hop pioneers. The symbolic renaming comes after a bill was approved by the New York City Council to rename the Queens intersection after the iconic rap group.
The new name of the Queens street corner will not only be an honor to groundbreaking rap pioneers Joseph "Run" Simmons and Darryl "DMC" McDaniels but it will also be place to commemorate the life of the group's late DJ Jason "Jam Master Jay" Mizell.
Mizell was fatally shot in a recording studio in Jamaica, Queens, at the age of 37, in October 2002. An arrest has yet to be made in the slaying which remains unsolved.
Councilman Leroy G. Comrie, the Queens Democrat who represents the area and sponsored the legislation, noted that Mr. McDaniels had donated memorabilia for the establishment of a proposed Hollis Hip Hop Museum, in the former Hollis Famous Burger establishment at 203rd Street and Hollis Avenue.
Run-DMC will forever be remembered for successfully combining rock and rap with their biggest hit single, a cover of Aerosmith's "Walk This Way," which they recorded with Aerosmith's Steven Tyler and Joe Perry.
Though the group disbanded after the death of Jam Master Jay in 2002, they reunited shortly in April when they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
