Owner Norma Jean Darden puts her heart into every peach cobbler she bakes. Seriously, you can actually see the hearts baked into the delicious thin crust covering mounds of fresh peach filling. Darden, a former Wilhelmina model with a sparkling smile and a slight North Carolina accent, has been making her peach cobbler at Miss Maude’s since 2011 and at sister restaurant Miss Mamie’s since 1999. The trick, she says, is to always “have more fresh fruit than a pie.” The recipe comes from Darden’s Southern family, whose portraits line her Harlem comfort food mecca. Three huge trays of peach cobbler are baked each day in the downstairs kitchen of the restaurant named after her grandma, and Darden swears they always sell out. At $4.95 apiece, with $1 extra for ice cream, it’s no wonder New Yorkers gobble up the best peach cobbler in the five boroughs.

Walk into Amy Ruth’s Restaurant at 11 a.m. on a weekday and chances are that everyone in the orange-hued Southern cuisine restaurant will be eating fried chicken and waffles. Go ahead and join the bandwagon, just don’t forget to leave room for a heaping bowl of Neal Shoemaker’s peach cobbler ($4.50). A lot of room. The crust might be soft, but that’s understandable with so many peaches piled on top. Spiced to perfection, the filling, made from two types of peaches, is flavorful without being too sweet. Perhaps that’s why Amy Ruth’s does not serve ice cream with their peach cobbler, leaving one final question: Who is Neal Shoemaker? Shoemaker leads walking tours through Harlem and is an avid proponent of the historic neighborhood’s best attributes — like the peach cobbler at Amy Ruth’s.
