Researchers from the University of Scranton in Scranton, PA, evaluated the amount of powerful antioxidants called polyphenols in 9 types of roasted and raw nuts and 2 types of peanut butter. Walnuts were found to have the highest amount of polyphenols.
Polyphenol antioxidants reduce the cell damage from free radicals that can lead to heart disease and certain forms of cancer. Nuts have also been shown to improve cholesterol levels and improve blood vessel function, all without causing weight gain. These qualities drive home the importance of including nuts in your daily diet as a nutritious healthy snack and food additive.
