(CNN) -- A nurse is suing a Michigan hospital for allegedly acquiescing to a man's race-based request that no African-Americans be involved in his baby's care. The lawsuit accuses managers at Hurley Medical Center in Flint of reassigning Tonya Battle based on the color of her skin. The man approached Battle, while she was caring for his child in the hospital's neonatal intensive care unit, asking to speak to her supervisor, according to the complaint filed in January by Battle's attorney. She pointed the charge nurse in his direction. The man, who is not named in the filing, allegedly showed her a tattoo that may have been "a swastika of some kind" and told her that he didn't want African-Americans involved in his baby's care. The request, according to the lawsuit, made its way through management ranks, and was granted. Battle's manager called her at home to tell her she would be reassigned -- and why, the suit says. She was shocked and in disbelief, her attorney Julie Gafkay told CNN affiliate WNEM. "She was very upset. She was very offended." The hospital did not immediately respond late Friday to a CNN request for comment. A note made its way onto prominent spot on the baby's medical chart, according to the suit: "Please, no African-American nurses to care for ... baby per dad's request." The hospital's lawyer then objected to the decision, and the note was removed. The staff then told the father that they could no long honor his request, according to the complaint. Hello to all,
Isn’t this blog another good, good reason why we Black Americans should want to become a sovereign people in a country of our own especially since God is now offering this option to us?
We are in the same situation as the Children of Israel were in when the Egyptian had them all bottled –up am I right. God resolved the problem so why don’t you have faith that God is resolving our problem as well?
Are going to go through these things forever? When are you all going to get some guts and faith in God?

Lawsuit: Former Flint city attorney claims Hurley officials misspent $200,000 in public money on retreat
... FLINT, MI -- Hurley Medical Center leaders wasted $200,000 on an unnecessary corporate retreat, according to a lawsuit filed in Genesee Circuit Court by former hospital executive and Flint city attorney Karen Lopez.
Lopez alleges that her employment at the hospital ended due to hostile and intimidating behavior by other executives after she spoke out about the possible unlawful conduct and discrimination.
Lopez claims Wardell used hospital money to benefit another executive's career, spending $200,000 of hospital funds on an unnecessary retreat.
The suit claims Wardell authorized the retreat to benefit a then-hospital vice president in conducting a "corporate culture" transformation that she needed for her master's degree thesis.
June 2011, Lopez claims Smith delivered a seven page memorandum protesting the board's treatment of him. In response, the lawsuit states the board hired an attorney to investigate the issues raised by Smith and that Lopez told the attorney about what she perceived to be "a policy of race discrimination affecting all minority employees" at the hospital.
Lopez told the attorney that there was a disparity in pay and promotional opportunities at the hospital for non-white employees. "

I haven't personally had blatant racial prejudices like these done against me, but I see male nurses all the time be discriminated against. Nothing happens since most male nurses I have met are lazy and are glad to let a female take care of their patients while they sit on the clock. Many see nursing dirty work as female nurses responsibilities.
Anyway, their is Racism everywhere and it's not unique to us alone. For me, I pick my battles that I fight, because their are ignorant people everywhere. Things like this happen. i don't find it shocking especially if the nurse was working in a suburb where there aren't a lot of minorities be it African Americans, Hispanics, African immigrants, ect,...
I personally don't like working in predominantly White hospitals, because patients and nurses see you as the maid and I don't got time for dat! You can trust that I'm gonna tell somebody OFF! The last time I was in a situation like that, " I told the folk that My People Were Emancipated and that I was a Free Woman." Ok!

Oh I have some liners! One time I told these folk that they might need to look into private duty nursing. They told my manager that I said I wasn't the maid. I corrected her and told her exactly what I said and she wanted to know why I would tell the patient that he needed to consider private duty nursing. I told her that I have to educate patients know

I remember as a young university student working my way thru, I'd taken a job as a nursing assistant. I vividly remember this elderly, blind, and decrepit White lady asking me if I was a Ni**a while I was helping the White nurse clean her stank behind because she'd pooped her diaper.
The nurse I was helping looked up in fear at me and while I was holding her rusty bum not missing a beat said emphatically, " NO! I'm a African America!"
The blind woman said, "Oh". That was the end of it. Ha! The nurse, Mindy was her name was about to Burst with laughter. No sooner had we got out of the room, Mindy ran to the nursing station in this predominantly White hospital to tell the others my clever response.
I didn't have time for it (ignorance) and sure haven't the time for it now. I make people take notice, because I know my stuff and that's how I keep it moving.

Jen... I luv your spunk! I don't know how I'd react to this degree of racisim from a patient or his/her family.
I work in the private sector, the only woman of color.... I hear all the sly comments; but I don't let it slip by lightly. I'm constantly having to stand my ground. And I'm so pro black and I don't have time for the foolishness. BUT I will show my ethnicity when it's in order.

Hey thanks Bro. Rob! I love being a nurse and I count it a privilege to be an extension of God's hands on the Earth. However, I have allergies to ignorance from anyone be it a Black, White, Yellow, or Brown.... Don't matter to Me. And with some folk, I find that they are just too, silly for me to respond to. But those I do respond to, I do it with grace and a lot of tact.
Hey Cynthia don't wear your feelings on your sleeves. Put things in perspective and look at the whole entire picture. For instance, most minorities (women, children, elderly, be it Natives, Black, Immigrants, ect,...) are treated poorly all over the globe. African American aren't some unique group of people who get picked on.
People especially our White brothers and sisters appreciate education and intelligent people of any background and that's what I've found. Let what you know speak for you. Some things don't deserve a comment. Go about your business makin' it do what it do.

I say I guess because I've been around some parts of the world; encountered many different ethnic cultures and traditions. I get comments like; o you're a smart girl... or you going to school to get all of that education .... It's like I am trying to better myself; something I need to do for myself and my family.
I don't know... like you say I guess I have to keep my feelings covered up. It's difficult working in a male dominated company... it's just as hard being the only female of color. I find some of the comments as just plain old ignorance.

Yep. This Nigerian family friend once said that a woman asked her how she learned To speak English so well. She told her that she learned it on the plane on the way over from Africa.
I would have said to the woman, English is the official language just like it is in America. These are opportunities to educate. When I was in Nigeria visiting my husband's cousin who is married to a school teacher, she was surprised that I didn't understand pidgin English. People lack exposure and sometimes we miss the opportunity to educate folk because we get offended, too easily.

Heck my dad is Native... But I don't know everything to know about his religious practice (spirit worshiping) .
I think it's more offensive when "my" people think in that same box; just because we are black don't mean I eat Watermelon, pickled pigs feet, ...
but gurl mess with my chitterlings and that's an automatic beat down.

Regarding being Black, I'm my own person and I don't allow folk to box me into their self defeating and self limiting stereotypes. I do me. I try to look for moments to educate folk when or if its appropriate. I don't get offended like I used to. I guess this is what maturing is all about.
Besides, life is to short to sweat the small stuff!
