North Carolina Lawmakers Launch Bipartisan Program to Tackle Diversity Issues on Capitol Hill (2503 hits)

The Bipartisan Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Caucus Internship Program was created to establish a pipeline of talented HBCU students to Capitol Hill. A recent study commissioned by the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies found that African Americans make up less than one percent of top Senate staffers. This issue is not isolated to the U.S. Senate and for that reason; Congresswoman Alma S. Adams and Congressman Mark Walker are taking action to increase staff diversity in the U.S. House of Representatives.

The Bipartisan HBCU Caucus internship is the first of its kind, featuring two interns during the pilot year. The interns will split an eight week internship between a Democratic and Republican office, serving four weeks in each.

Representatives Alma Adams (D-NC), Bradley Byrne (R-AL) and Mark Walker (R-NC) are each Members of the Bipartisan HBCU Caucus launched by Reps Adam and Byrne.
