Black-owned Opera For Us Organization Brings Opera and Food to Chesapeake’s Summit Pointe Sept 14 (903 hits)

Join us for a one-of-a-kind community experience that blends the beauty of live opera with the vibrant flavors of Toastique from September 14 from 5:30-7 p.m. Hosted in the heart of Chesapeake at Summit Pointe, this open-air event invites guests to relax, unwind, and enjoy a dynamic fusion of music, culture, and clean, nourishing cuisine. With a stunning outdoor backdrop, the evening will feature stirring performances by Opera for Us, an organization dedicated to making opera accessible and inclusive.

Hosted by Toastique, a casual, clean eatery featuring a menu of gourmet toasts, juices and smoothies made with fresh ingredients, this event will blend wellness and music for a community-focused experience in a charming atmosphere. This event is great for professionals, families, students, and so much more, looking to enjoy the final dog days of summer! The Chesapeake Toastique location is the first owner operation of the national franchise and the only location in Coastal Virginia.

The event will showcase stirring performances of select scenes from Scott Joplin’s Treemonisha and Verdi’s La Traviata. Treemonisha is a riveting opera created by African American ragtime composer, Scott Joplin. It's acclaimed as one of the earliest African American operas. La Traviata is also regarded as one of the most revolutionary operas well-known for its bold characters, emotional depth, and masterful music and storytelling.

Members of Opera For Us will be joined by guest singers from the Virginia Opera Chorus and Virginia Chorale, offering audiences a rare opportunity to experience both beloved classics and groundbreaking works in a relaxed outdoor setting.
Founded by Denise Battle Price, Opera For Us is dedicated to bringing opera into the heart of the community. Through performances, workshops, and engaging educational programs, Price has built a movement that makes opera more accessible, inclusive, and inspiring.

“Opera belongs to the people. It’s a universal story told through music, and with Opera For Us, I’ve been able to bring that story to new audiences who may have never seen themselves reflected in this artform,” said Price.

“With A Toast to Opera at the Pointe, we’re creating a space where everyone can experience the power and joy of opera in an environment that feels welcoming and alive.”

Tickets include a dining experience curated by Toastique:
● Adults $35: gourmet toast, fresh juice, and a sweet treat
● Kids $15: grilled cheese, drink, and treat

Guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or picnic blankets to enjoy this evening designed to nourish both body and spirit.

More than a performance, A Toast to Opera at the Pointe is a celebration of culture, wellness, and community.
