Virginia State University To Honor Mr. Jim Holland With Posthumous Honorary Degree (1105 hits)

VSU will recognize the late James M. “Jim” Holland—distinguished public servant, Army veteran, and unwavering advocate for the University—with a Posthumous Honorary Degree during its Fall 2025 Commencement Ceremony.

For nearly two decades, Mr. Holland dedicated his life to improving the quality of life for Chesterfield County residents. Beginning his service in 2008, he quickly emerged as a respected leader whose thoughtful decision-making and community-focused vision earned widespread admiration. In 2014, he made history as the first African American Chairman of the Chesterfield County Board of Supervisors.

Mr. Holland’s commitment to education and public service extended deeply to Virginia State University. A former college professor, he believed in the life-changing power of higher education and consistently championed opportunities that strengthened the relationship between VSU and Chesterfield County. His steadfast advocacy helped forge a partnership that continues to support students, families, and the broader community.

Mr. Holland passed away in October following a courageous battle with cancer. In recognition of his enduring contributions and his decades-long support of the University, VSU will award Holland a Posthumous Honorary Degree—one of the institution’s highest distinctions, reserved for individuals who have made significant, lasting impacts on the University and its mission.

“Jim Holland dedicated his life to making a difference for others,” said VSU President Dr. Makola M. Abdullah. “He was a true friend to Virginia State University and a champion for education. His legacy of compassion and service will continue to live on in the community he loved.”
Virginia State University will hold its Fall 2025 Commencement on Saturday, December 13, inside the VSU Multi-Purpose Center. The processional will begin at 8:30 a.m.
