I'm am a big time word nerd, so I don't know how I really feel about this. One one hand, if you know what a person means even when they misspell it, it seems alright for it to be overlooked or not discounted.

My biggest issue is with the misuse of a word or making up words for the words you're really trying to use. LOL. Was that confusing?

On the other hand, I think at least some of the errors are laziness and lack of study. It's a toss up for me.

...or saying "depart wisdom" instead of "impart..." anything.

Or the following.....(Mister Johnson, you got me started):

conversate instead of converse (conversate is NOT a word)

irregardless instead of "regardless"

Orientate instead or "orientation" or "oriented"

old-timers disease instead of "Alheizmer's disease"

interpretate for "interpret"

verbious for "verbose"

And then other misuses altogether:

affect / effect

wonder / wander

there / their / they're

to / too / two

than / then

further / farther

principle / principal

jealousy / envy (not the same thing)

Ok...I'll stop now. The list goes on and on...

Blessings...

When I lived in England...I caught hell as an American.

Our American words are not English words in the land that invented our language. Example Tire/ Tyre, Organization/ Organisation...go figure.

Dr. Grover, a colleague of mine sent me this:

Why English Is Hard To Learn

You've gotta admit, its a pretty stupid language. Id hate to be a foreigner trying to learn it. Here's 21 reasons why English is a pain in the ass.

1. The bandage was wound around the wound.

2. The farm was used to produce produce.

3. The dump was so full it had to refuse more refuse.

4. We must polish the Polish furniture.

5. He could lead if he would get the lead out.

6. The soldier decided to desert his dessert in the desert.

7. Since there was no time like the present, he thought it was time to present the present.

8. A bass was painted on the head of the bass drum.

9. When shot at, the dove dove into the bushes.

10. I did not object to the object.

11. The insurance was invalid for the invalid.

12. There was a row among the oarsmen on how to row.

13. They were too close to the door to close it.

14. The buck does funny things when does are present.

15. A seamstress and a sewer fell down into a sewer line.

16. To help with planting, the farmer taught his sow to sow.

17. The wind was too strong to wind the sail.

18. After a number of injections my jaw got number.

19. Upon seeing the tear in the painting I shed a tear.

20. I had to subject the subject to a series of tests.

21. How can I intimate this to my most intimate friend?

Kenneth, as word junkie, I really dig this. Thanks for posting.

Another one that gets me is DISORIENTATED instead of disORIENTED.

Dr. Glover, I am also a terrible speller and I might add writer. Hopefully one day I can get over this mental road block, because I have a couple of ideas to share in form of a book. I was always surrounded with friends who had the gift to write well. So when I was younger I didn't feel comfortable, I guess it stumped my growth.

I wanna throw another element into this discussion. How has text messaging affected all of this? Words are truncated so as to cut down on type time and number of letters. If a person can make a few letters symbolize the word they are trying to spell, its all good. I consider myself a decent speller but sometimes I get in a hurry when I am writing or typing and either misspell words or put a word in the sounds like the one I really meant. Guess I should do more proofreading. LOL!

My mother was a librarian, so correct spelling was a must in our home. She would say that misspelled correspondence makes the writer look ignorant, no matter how good the ideas were. Akin to Dee's pet peeve of 'disorientated,' my pet peeve are words like 'conversate.' Come on, conversate? Would you 'invitate' someone somewhere? People converse!

Spelling is definately compelling, and getting the word spelled right when I'm writing bothers me. Which is why I have to constantly keep looking words up in a dictionary.-- I really do.

I can understand the desire to change some of the variants that people use, but are we not just reducing things to make up for some educational shortcomings? Now this is not at all to state that people who make spelling errors are unintelligent. But its seems like we are lowering the bar. Especially when the rest of the world is only raising it for their own. Common mistakes should be forgiven depending on the circumstance. But I think that it is a step backwards, especially with all the text messaging that is becoming more rampant every day, people are starting to use so many abbreviations that they sound as if they speak in code. Relaxing expectations in grammar will only help to further the regression. While we are at it lets drop fractions from math, I never liked those pesky things anyway, if pi is 3.14 or "around 3.1" its still pi right?? Fractions are used so that you can state a number "exactly", words are used so that you may convey something "exactly" or as close to exact as possible.

Kids and people in general are getting so used to BRB, LOL!, U R CRZY, etc. that it doesn't give them much practice writing long form. I would think that eventually it will start to eat away at our overall literary ability.
