Dr. Marcus E. Vandiver
Education specialist for Alabama State Department of Education, B.S. 1998; M.Ed. 2002; Ed.D. 2007


Dr. Marcus E. Vandiver is an education specialist with the Alabama Department of Education’s Prevention and Support Services. His responsibilities include research, data analysis, statistical interpretation, program administration and database management.
Currently, he is the administrator for a state-funded, student-assistance program for at-risk youths, high school dropouts, school safety and discipline, and high school tutoring, which includes program approval and budget analysis of close to $30 million.
Vandiver has trained school professionals in several states on topics such as utilizing data for school improvement, school bullying, classroom management, behavior and discipline, and school culture and school climate.

At ASU, Vandiver was an Alabama Alliance for Minority Participation scholar. In 1998, he earned a Bachelor of

Science in chemistry with a minor in mathematics, graduating cum laude.
While working on a master’s degree, Vandiver began teaching in the high school and middle school grades of the Montgomery Public Schools System.
In 2007, he finished requirements for the Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership, Policy and Law at ASU. His dissertation, “Current Practice and Training in School Violence Prevention and Crisis Response Procedures: Perceptions of Alabama Middle School Principals and Counselors,” won an outstanding dissertation award through the International Society of Education Planning.

Vandiver credits ASU with preparing him for life’s lessons.

“I learned a lot at ASU and the faculty was top-notch,” he said. “That’s why I keep coming back for more education.”
