Sequoias Community College District is seeking a qualified and equity-minded candidate to fill a full-time, tenure-track position in the Theatre Department beginning August 2026.

Assignments may include evening classes, online/remote instruction, and teaching at any of the Sequoias Community College District Campuses: Visalia, Hanford and/or Tulare. Participation in the governance of the Sequoias Community College District by way of committee assignments is encouraged.

*College of the Sequoias offers lecture-lab pay parity, as well as overload and large lecture compensation that may be additional.

About the Theatre Arts Program

College of the Sequoias Theatre Arts is a nationally recognized award-winning program committed to innovation, equity, and excellence both in the classroom and in production. The program is housed in a four hundred seat proscenium theatre with full fly loft and state of the art lighting and sound equipment. Support facilities include a 2500 sq. ft. scene shop, a small but well-equipped costume shop, three dressing rooms plus storage facilities. The program offers a well-rounded curriculum in Theatre Arts for completion of three separate Associate's degrees - Theatre Arts for Transfer, Technical Theatre, and Acting. Finally, the Theatre program produces four fully-realized productions per year: two in the Fall semester and two in the Spring with at least one being a large-scale musical in collaboration with the Music and Dance Departments.

Job Duties


The primary responsibilities of this position include teaching courses in the discipline of technical theater, including Stage Lighting, Stagecraft, Intro to Theatre, and/or other areas as qualified, while also serving as Technical Director and, as needed in at least one of the following capacities for each production: Lighting Designer, Scenic Designer, Sound Designer, or Projection Designer.

This position will be responsible for the build & supervision of all aspects of lighting and scenery construction for all productions; fulfilment of at least one design discipline on each production; adhering to and participating in the development of production timelines and budgets; communicating technical progress as requested; the safe and efficient operation of the scene shop; participating in load-in, set-up, and strike, occasional movement and transportation of materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds; availability as needed during evening and weekend rehearsals and productions.

Other responsibilities include maintenance of regular office hours, active engagement with campus culture, participation in departmental responsibilities, and the willingness to create and participate in and sustain an atmosphere of equity, which is respectful of diversity District wide.

Qualifications


The candidate must meet the following criteria:
  • Master's or Master of Fine Arts in drama/theater arts/performance OR
  • Bachelor's or Bachelor of Fine Arts in drama/theater arts/performance AND Master's in comparative literature, English, communication studies, speech, literature or humanities OR
  • The equivalent

JOB REQUIRED CORE SYSTEM COMPETENCY

The candidate must also demonstrate sensitivity to, and understanding of, the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students pursuant to Title 5 53022.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

The Theatre Department is looking for evidence of the following:
  • Master's or Master of Fine Arts in Technical Direction, Technical Theatre, or Design & Technology
  • A history of work in the theatre which demonstrates:
    • Exemplary completion of duties.
    • The flexibility required to respond to emergent challenges and opportunities.
    • Ability to teach a full load of classes and accomplish production work at the same time.
  • Experience as a Technical Director.
  • Experience in at least one of the following: Lighting Design, Scenic Design, Sound Design, Projection Design
  • Exceptional organizational and management skills.
  • Evidence of expertise using theatrical lighting and construction tools and equipment.
  • Excellence in Drafting utilizing VectorWorks or AutoCAD Auto Desk software.
  • Extensive knowledge of OSHA, industry safety compliance rules, and the safe use of theatrical equipment.
  • Ability to supervise Electrics and Construction Crews.
  • A history of cultivating respectful, courteous, and cooperative relationships.
  • Implementation of affirmative, efficient, and ethical working practices.
  • Experience teaching/working in education, including:
    • Commitment to mentoring students.
    • Commitment to working with students from diverse cultural, ethnic, socioeconomic, academic, and disability backgrounds.
  • Maintenance of professional development, creative activity, and service

  • Letters of Recommendation are not being requested at this stage in the application process.
    • Individuals selected for an interview will be asked to provide two letters of recommendation which address the candidate's history of collaboration, adaptability, and communication while working on productions.
