Job Summary

Basic functions and responsibilities

Under direct supervision of the Principal Investigator perform scientific research in the field of Pediatric Hematology.  Participate in a supervisory role for junior research staff and support personnel.  Participate in extra-mural grant writing and academic authorship.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Develop, design, and conduct research experiments under the direction of the PI mentor
  • Conducting research centering on studies of blood coagulation disorders using zebrafish and models, as well as human data
  • Participate in the supervision of laboratory technicians and graduate students under the direction of the PI mentor
  • Participate in writing grants and scientific papers, present at meetings, and generate data for grants.

It is the Department's expectation for Research Investigators to generate peer-reviewed publications of their current work and/or individual salary support on sponsored funds by the end of the fourth year of the Research Investigator appointment. Peer-reviewed publications are required for advancement to the Research Scientist track. Peer-reviewed publications along with plans and development for independent funding are required for advancement to the Research Professor track.

Supervision Received

Direction is received from the Principal Investigator. Staff members in this classification are expected to work independently and in collaboration with other laboratory personnel, regularly exercise good judgment in setting priorities, resolving operational problems and the application of procedures, methods and policies. 

Supervision Exercised 

Functional supervision may be exercised over lab assistant, graduate students and other junior personnel.

Required Qualifications*

Qualifications Required:

  • PhD degree and at least 3 years of postdoctoral experience in a recognized field of science directly related to the position
  • Seven-ten years of directly related laboratory experience, especially genetics, bioinformatics, zebrafish, and drug screening 
  • Exceptional work ethic in a highly competitive environment.
  • Ability to communicate clearly the results of his/her experiments to other team members
  • Strong knowledge of molecular and cell biology, especially in the field of hematology and blood coagulation
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, GraphPad Prism, Linux, Advanced Research Computing using HPC clusters 
  • Familiarity with basic laboratory instrumentation and maintenance of laboratory equipment 
  • Proficient in record keeping 
  • Skilled in bioinformatics tools for data analysis and interpretation, and for genetic mapping and positional cloning 
  • Hands on skills and experience with all standard molecular and cell biology techniques (e.g. (q)PCR, Cloning, microscopy, genetic modification)
  • Advanced skills in manipulation of zebrafish embryos, including injections, genome editing, and phenotyping
