Job Description
Registered Nurse (RN) - Interventional Radiology
Interventional Radiology (IR) offers a dynamic and fast-paced environment where highly skilled medical professionals work together to provide cutting-edge, minimally invasive procedures for our patients. We focus on the assessment, evaluation, and treatment of blood vessels, excluding the heart and brain, as well as managing all venous access for the hospital. The RN plays a critical role in patient care, working in a collaborative setting alongside a multidisciplinary team.

Key Features of the IR Department
Large Nursing Station: Equipped with computers, patient and cardiac monitor screens, and patient call system.
EPIC System: Utilized for Electronic Medical Record (EMR) charting and documentation.
Procedure Rooms: 8 procedure rooms with state-of-the-art equipment, including individual patient care carts, monitoring systems, and large screens displaying vital signs.
14-Bed Pre- and Post-Recovery Area: Dedicated to preparing and recovering patients following procedures.

Note: The IR team does not manage critical care patients but collaborates closely with Critical Care Nurses (RNs) for patient care within the department.

Types of Procedures Performed
The IR team performs a wide variety of procedures to assess, evaluate, and treat blood vessels, with a focus on non-cardiac and non-cerebral cases, as well as managing all venous access for the hospital. Common procedures include:
Central Venous Access: Ports, PICCs, Trifusion lines
Dialysis Maintenance: Fistulagrams, declots, HD lines
Venous Recanalization
Embolization: For bleeding vessels and tumors (including chemo options)
Biliary and Nephrostomy Tube Placement & Maintenance
TPA Infusion (Lysis): For occluded arteries/veins and pulmonary embolisms
Radiofrequency & Cryoablation: For tumors
Liver and Renal Biopsy
Hepatic Bypass Procedures: TIPs & BRTO
Angioplasty/Thrombectomy/Stenting: For any vessels, excluding brain and heart
Select Vertebroplasty Patients
G/J Tube Placements
RN Role and Responsibilities
As an RN in Interventional Radiology, you will be responsible for the following:
Pre-Procedure Workup: Ensuring patients are properly prepared for their procedures.
Intra-Procedure Monitoring: Providing continuous patient monitoring during the procedure.
Post-Procedure Monitoring & Discharge: Ensuring patients recover safely and are discharged appropriately.
Pre-Calls: Contacting patients in advance of procedures to confirm details and provide information.
Patient Education: Explaining the procedure to patients and their families pre- and post-procedure.
IV Start & Blood Draws: Initiating IVs, drawing blood, and sending required lab specimens.
Procedural Sedation: Administering sedation (typically fentanyl and versed) during procedures.
Project Involvement: Engaging in process improvement initiatives and standard work.
Shared Governance Participation: Actively participating in Unit and Hospital Education and Practice teams.
Committee Involvement: Representing the nursing staff in Radiology and Medical Imaging department committees and initiatives.
Hours of Operation
Monday-Friday: 0600-1800 (staffed until 1930 during the week)
Average number of cases per day: 30 patients
Weekend & Holiday Coverage: On-call for emergent/urgent procedures
o Typically 3-4 on-call shifts in a 6-week period, with a weekend call every 7-10 weeks.
Schedule Options:
o Four 10-hour shifts: 0630-1700, 0730-1800, 0900-1930
o Three 12-hour shifts: 0700-1930
Overtime: Overtime is paid at time and a half for hours worked over 40 in a week.
Call Pay:
o $6.50/hour for being on call
o $10/hour for each hour worked when called back or when continuing the shift into the call period
Must be able to arrive at UVA within 30 minutes when on call. This job description integrates the ANA Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice and the ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses with Interpretive Statements, and the UVA Nursing Professional Practice Model.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education: Graduate of an accredited nursing program required. Bachelor of Science in Nursing required within 5 years of hire.

Experience: 1 year of relevant experience.

Licensure: Licensed to Practice as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia. American Heart Association (AHA) Health Care Provider BLS certification required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Job requires standing for prolonged periods, frequently traveling, bending/stooping. Proficient communicative, auditory and visual skills; Attention to detail and ability to write legibly; Ability to lift/push/pull 20 - 50lbs. May be exposed to chemicals, blood/body fluids and infectious disease.

The starting base rate for this role is $39.90 hourly. Individual compensation will be determined by the selected candidate's qualifications, previous work experience, and/or education.
