I did enjoy the first segment of the CNN Black In America series. Although, I could have done
without the brother in the beginning rapping and rhyming. I'm glad they touched on the educational
situation we face in America. Hopefully that will continue with tonight's series. Let me just say
that I agree with as many solutions as possible to get us out of our decadent situation in terms
of educational success. Coming out of the Afrocentric movement, I'm focused more on the studies of
Dr. Jawanza Kunjufu and the 2004 & 2006 State of Black America reports by the National Urban
League. As a teacher in a suburban-ghetto within a rich district, I see everyday the distorted
mentality our youth have, which is a by-product of hijacked hip hop by gangsta rap and popular
culture. In addition, the by-product of the black power movement, ie, being articulate and
educated means you are "acting white" and you are a "bitch ass nigga," is a sober reality
happening all over America as young black youth trade education for prison culture and pimp
ideology. Mr. Charlie is not pushing this...this time. My thoughts and ideas center around
"experiences." We need to get our youth exposed to unfamiliar and alien activities so that mentaly
they can "get out of the box." We need national black organizations, churches, fraternities,
sororities, Masons, businesses and school districts to create what I call Follow Guardians. These
Follow Guardians are combination's of the a fore-mentioned groups. They adopt a class starting
with kindergarten and financially cover unique "life experiences," such as, scuba diving,
snorkeling, canoeing, cave exploration, robotics, etc. All the things that many of us stereotype
as "for whites only." It is a gamble, but if we can counter the current counter culture with these
mind-altering activities, then hopefully we can have a major impact upon the next generation of
African-Americans who can realize they have opportunities in life such as, being a mountain bike
design engineer, anthropologist, paleontologist, nano-tech engineer, surfboard designer and much
more. We have to get them out of the box and now or we will see our collective over-run by those
who percieve pimpdom, gangsterology and mistreatment of our women as the norm, as the defacto
standard of how life should be. The assault on education by our people is a movement of
anti-intellectualism and it when it comes to what we bring to the table of humanity, we will be
perceived to bring nothing but tap dancing, ignorance and violence. Once we expose our youth to
these "experiences," then we will have better tests scores. An out of the box youth will sit in
front of an SAT exam with questions containing mountain climbing, tennis, and hang gliding and not
have a problem because those activities have been experienced. I"m watching the mental transitions
everyday. It will take more than an Afrocentric movement and a Black Male Initiative to get us
past this current dilemma. And holding meetings and conferences and talking "at" and "to" our
youth is old and a waste of time. Action is required. Investment is required. Experiences beyond
the norm are required. Take a look at these two online videos. What they present is real and the
biggest threat to our existence and standing.
