With the Holiday seasons abound and American Blacks shopping and spending time with family and friends, our minds begin to focus on buying presents and making people happy, even ourselves.
However, do things/material items make us happy? Are material things the ultimate when it comes to us being peaceful and living progressive lives??
When we look at events such as Enron, the recent falling of American banks, and foreclosures, I do not believe that owning material things makes us ultimately happy.
The CEOs of these companies got to where they are because of their worship of material possessions and remaining the status quo.
I ask, how can we be happy with ourselves when owning things become our goals and focus in life? DVD players, plasma screen TVs, fifty-thousand dollar cars, etc. Where is the true essence or spirit in owning such things??
How about real friendships, close families and a love for knowledge, wisdom and understanding?
A lot of us have lost sight of these things in order to have, and be afraid of becoming one of the havenots.
I believe we should return to the essence of beautiful things in life like friends, family and kindred love in order to escape such a need to own things. Only then, will we be happy in the long run.
